Rear Driveshaft

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1600, 2000 and 2002 Models
  1. Support the transmission from underneath with a transmission jack or other secure jacking device. Loosen but do not remove the nuts located underneath which fasten the crossmember to the body. Then, slide this crossmember as far to the rear as it will go.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the fastening nuts on the forward end of the flexible giubo coupler and discard them.
  4.  
  5. Using a prybar to keep the driveshaft from turning, remove the self locking nuts and bolts fastening the rear of the driveshaft to the final drive.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts fastening the center mount to the body. Bend the driveshaft down and pull the coupler off the transmission flange.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install in the reverse order keeping in mind the following points;
    1. Replace the self-locking nuts used at either end of the shaft.
    2.  
    3. Preload the center mount forward by 0.0-0.2 inches (4-5mm).

3 Series Models

2-WHEEL DRIVE

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9

  1. Remove the entire exhaust system. Remove the crossbrace under the driveshaft. Remove the heatshield.
  2.  
  3. Mark the position of the center bearing bracket with paint. Remove the retaining bolts securing the center bearing bracket.
  4.  
  5. Paint alignment marks on either side of the center bearing bracket.
  6.  
  7. Use tool 26 1 040 or equivalent to loosen the spline locking ring behind the center bearing.
  8.  
  9. Support the transmission and remove the crossmember. Remove the bolts holding the flexible giubo coupling to the transmission output flange. If equipped with a vibration damper, rotate the damper and pull off with the flex coupling.

  1. Remove the bolts between the driveshaft and differential flange.
  2.  
  3. Pull the driveshaft down and out. Avoid catching the fuel tank connector pipe at the rear. Avoid severe angles at the joints.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the driveshaft and loosely install the center bearing to the body. Connect the rear joint to the differential. If equipped with U-joints, tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm). If equipped with a constant velocity joint, tighten the M8 bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) and the M10 bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the front flex coupling and vibration damper. Tighten the M10-8.8 bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) and the M10-10.9 bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the transmission crossmember. Preload the center bearing forward 0.1-0.2 inches (4-6 mm) and tighten. Tighten the spline locking ring to 12 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the heatshields and crossmember. Install the exhaust system.
  8.  

4-WHEEL DRIVE
  1. Remove the entire exhaust system. Remove the crossbrace under the driveshaft. Remove the heatshield.
  2.  
  3. Use tool 26 1 040 or equivalent to loosen the spline locking ring at the rear of the shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts holding the flexible giubo coupler to the transmission output flange. If equipped with a vibration damper, rotate the damper and pull off with the flex coupling.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts between the driveshaft and differential flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove the center bearing bolts and pull the driveshaft down. Avoid catching the fuel tank connector pipe at the rear. Avoid severe angles at the joints.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the driveshaft and loosely install the center bearing to the body. Connect the rear joint to the differential. If equipped with U-joints, tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm). If equipped with a constant velocity joint, tighten the M8 bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) and the M10 bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).

  3. Install the front flex coupling and vibration damper. Tighten the M10-8.8 bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) and the M10-10.9 bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Preload the center bearing forward 0.1-0.2 inches (4-6 mm) and tighten. Tighten the spline locking ring to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the heatshields and crossmember. Install the exhaust system.
  8.  

5, 6 and 7 Series

EXCEPT MODELS EQUIPPED WITH CV-JOINT TYPE DRIVESHAFTS AND 1987-88 735i MODELS

  1. Remove the entire exhaust system. Remove the crossbrace under the driveshaft. Remove the heatshield. Mark the relationship of the driveshaft flanges to the differential flange and the transmission output flange.
  2.  
  3. Use tool 26 1 040 or equivalent to loosen the spline locking ring behind the center bearing.
  4.  
  5. Support the transmission and remove the transmission crossmember. Remove the bolts holding the flexible giubo coupling to the transmission output flange. If equipped with a vibration damper, rotate the damper and pull off with the flex coupling.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts between the driveshaft and differential flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove the center bearing bolts and pull the driveshaft down. Avoid catching the fuel tank connector pipe at the rear. Avoid severe angles at the joints.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the driveshaft and loosely install the center bearing to the body. Connect the rear joint to the differential. If equipped with U-joints, tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm). If equipped with a constant velocity joint, tighten the M8 bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) and the M10 bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).

  3. Install the front flex coupling and vibration damper. Tighten the M10-8.8 bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) and the M10-10.9 bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).

  5. Install the transmission crossmember. Preload the center bearing forward 0.1-0.2 inches (4-6 mm) and tighten. Tighten the spline locking ring to 12 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).

  7. Install the heatshields and crossmember. Install the exhaust system.

1987-88 735i MODELS

If the car has a front universal joint, use special tools 24 0 120 and 00 2 020 to support the transmission during this operation.

  1. Remove the entire exhaust system. Remove the heat shield from the floorpan. Remove the nuts and bolts fastening the driveshaft to the transmission at the flexible coupling. Replace the self-locking nuts.
  2.  
  3. If the car has a front U-joint, support the transmission from underneath with tools 24 0 120 or the equivalent. When the transmission is securely supported, remove the bolts and remove the rear transmission mounting crossmember.
  4.  
  5. Remove the self-locking nuts and then the bolts fastening the driveshaft to the final drive. Replace the self-locking nuts. Remove the driveshaft, taking care to keep it protected from dirt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts from the crossbrace underneath and remove the center driveshaft mount. Then, bend the shaft at the middle and remove it from the car by pulling it off the centering pin on the forward end.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install in reverse order, keeping the following points in mind:
    1. Repack the CV joining with Moly-type grease and replace the gasket, if necessary.
    2.  
    3. Check the center bearing for lubrication and if it's dry, lubricate with Molykote® Long-term 2 or equivalent grease.
    4.  
    5. When remounting the center mount, preload it forward from its most natural position 0.1-0.2 inches (4-6mm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the U-joint bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) and CV-joint bolts to 51 ft. lbs. (66 Nm)

528e, 535i AND 633CSi WITH CV-JOINT

To perform this procedure, procure a set of tools designed to support the transmission via the pan BMW tools 24 0 120 and 00 2 020 or equivalent.

  1. Support the transmission from underneath. Remove the nuts and washers from the transmission mounts on top of the transmission crossmember. Loosen but do not remove the nuts located underneath which fasten the crossmember to the body. Then, slide the crossmember as far to the rear as it will go.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the fastening nuts on the forward end of the CV-joint and then discard.
  4.  
  5. Using a prybar to keep the driveshaft from turning, remove the self-locking nuts and bolts fastening the rear of the driveshaft to the final drive.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts fastening the center mount to the body. Bend the driveshaft down and pull the CV-joint off the transmission flange. Cover the joint to keep it clean.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Replace the gasket that fits between the joint bolts. Install in reverse order, keeping these points in mind:
    1. Replace the self-locking nuts used at either end of the shaft.
    2.  
    3. Preload the center mount forward by forcing the bracket 0.1-0.2 inches (4-5mm) forward from the neutral position on 5 Series cars and 0.1-0.2 inches (4-6mm) forward on 6 Series cars.
