A 3-way catalyst is installed in the exhaust system to reduce HC and CO emissions by a chemical reaction which finishes the combustion process on fuel that is not completely burned. The catalyst turns HC and CO emissions into carbon dioxide and water vapor (steam).
The 3-way catalyst does not require any servicing, aside from periodic inspection for cracks, damage or rattles. If the car has been driven with leaded gasoline, it will be necessary to replace both the converter and the oxygen sensor.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4
- Detach the exhaust pipe at the exhaust manifold.
- Detach the brace and heat shield.
- Disconnect the converter from the exhaust pipe and remove the converter.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace all gaskets and self-locking nuts. Make sure the mounting brace is not under excessive stress or exhaust system noises may be caused.
