REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except 3 Series, 524td and 528e Models
  1. Drain the cooling system and remove the radiator.
  2.  


CAUTION
When draining coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze, and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Remove the fan blade and any pulley attached to the water pump.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine lifting hook that's in the way before removing any water pump retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the retaining bolts securing the water pump to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Place a pan below the water pump to catch any coolant which may spill out when the pump is removed.
  8.  
  9. To remove the water pump, tap the water pump body with the palm of your hand to break the seal and remove from the engine.
  10.  
  11. If reinstalling the pump, clean any gasket material from the water pump. Purchase a new water pump gasket.
  12.  
  13. Clean any gasket material from the engine mating surface.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Position the water pump up to the engine with a the gasket placed between the pump and the engine. Secure the pump in place with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern to 16-17 ft. lbs. 20-24 Nm).

  3. Attach the pulley, belt and fan.
  4.  
  5. Tension the belt. Connect the negative battery cable. Fill and bleed the cooling system.

3 Series Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.

  1. Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Remove the rotor adapter, the dust shield and the distributor housing.

  1. Remove the fan by removing the fan coupling nut. Remember the nut is left hand thread, therefore turn clockwise to remove.
  2.  
  3. Remove the belt and pulley.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rubber guard and distributor and or upper timing belt cover.
  6.  
  7. Compress the timing tensioner spring and clamp pin with the proper tool.
  8.  

Observe the installed position of the tensioner spring pin on the water pump housing for reinstallation purposes.

  1. Remove the water hoses.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 3 water pump bolts and remove the pump.
  4.
