Stabilizer Bar

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1600, 2000, 2002, 2500, 2800, 3000, Bavaria and 3.0 Models
  1. Raise and support the front end securely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the stabilizer bar at the control arms.
  4.  
  5. Remove the attaching nut and then detach the push rod on the stabilizer bar at the strut assembly.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the nut which attaches the front of the stabilizer bar to the crossmember and remove the nut from above the crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Lower the stabilizer bar down and away from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the pushrod nuts to 24-34 ft. lbs. (31-44 Nm).

1975-83 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series Models
  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
    1. On the 320, 528e, 533i and 633CSi models, disconnect the stabilizer bar at the control arms.
    2.  
    3. On the 318i models remove the attaching nut and then detach the push rod on the stabilizer bar at the strut.
    4.  
    5. On the 524td, 528e, 633CSi models, disconnect the stabilizer push rod at the bracket on the side of the strut. To do this, use a wrench to hold the rod end on the flats just outside the bracket and unscrew the nut from the inside of the bracket.
    6.  
    7. On the 318i models, remove the nut and disconnect the thrust rod on the front stabilizer bar where it connects to the center of the control arm.
    8.  
    9. On the 318i models. unscrew the nut which attaches the front of the stabilizer bar to the crossmember and remove the nut from above the crossmember. Then, use a plastic hammer to knock this support pin out of the crossmember.

  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the pushrod nuts to 24-34 ft. lbs. (31-44 Nm).

1984-88 3 Series Models

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar link nuts at the stabilizer bar. Disconnect the links from the bar on both sides.

  1. Remove the bolts holding the left control arm bracket.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolts holding the stabilizer bar and bushings to the body. Remove the stabilizer bar out from the left side.

To install:
  1. Install the stabilizer bar and bushings. Tighten the bushing mounts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) with the wrench flats parallel to the edges of the bar. Install the left control arm bracket and tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).

  3. Install the stabilizer bar links and tighten the nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm). Tighten the control arm mounting nut to 30 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).

1984-88 5, 6 and 7 Series Models
  1. Raise and support the front end.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar link nuts at the stabilizer bar. Disconnect the links from the bar on both sides.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts holding the stabilizer bar and bushings to the body. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the stabilizer bar and bushings. The bushing slit will face down. Tighten the bushing mounts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar links and tighten the nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) with the wrench flats parallel to the edges of the bar. Tighten the link to control arm mounting nut to 30 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
