REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series Models

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws or bolts depending on year and model from the driver and passenger front side of the console.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with radio in center console, remove. Refer to the section in Chassis Electrical for removal details.
  6.

  1. Lift out the floor section below the brake and remove the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shifter knob front the shift lever. On manual transmission equipped models, remove the shift boot around the lever.
  4.  
  5. On automatic equipped models, remove the retaining screws securing the shifter plate around the lever.
  6.  
  7. Lift the center console over the brake handle and out of the way.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the center console between the seats, and work the brake handle through the opening.
  2.  
  3. Install the automatic shifter plate or manual shifter boot around the shift lever.
  4.  
  5. Secure using the screws or bolts removed earlier.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the the shifter knob to the shift lever.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

3 Series Models

See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower dash trim from under the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Pull out the ashtray from the rear of the console. Remove the screw underneath. Pull the console back and off the brake lever. Disconnect the wiring.
  6.  
  7. Pull the manual transmission shift knob off the shift lever. Pull the shifter boot up and off. On automatic equipped vehicles unclip the trim on the right side of the shifter. Remove the screws exposed.
  8.  
  9. Pull out and disconnect the window switches.
  10.

  1. Remove the forward ashtray assembly, then remove the screws from below the forward ashtray console and lift out. Disconnect the wiring for the lighter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolts below the heater controls. Rotate the retainers on the sides of the consoles to release. Pull the console out.
  4.  
  5. Install in reverse order.
  6.  

320i MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws from the driver and passenger front side of the console.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with a radio in the console, remove it by unfastening the knobs and retaining hardware, then sliding it out and detaching the harness from the rear. Refer to Chassis Electrical for details.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with a rear ashtray, pull the ashtray out from the rear of the console. Remove the screw underneath. Disconnect any necessary wiring.
  8.  
  9. Pull the manual transmission shift knob off the shift lever. Pull the shifter boot up and off. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles unclip the trim on the right side of the shifter. Remove the screws exposed.
  10.  
  11. Pull out and disconnect the window switches, if equipped with power windows.
  12.  
  13. Remove the forward ashtray assembly, then remove the screws from below the forward ashtray console and lift out. Disconnect the wiring for the lighter.
  14.  
  15. Lift the center console over the brake handle and out of the way.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the center console between the seats, and work the brake handle through the opening.
  2.  
  3. Install the automatic shifter plate or manual shifter boot around the shift lever.
  4.  
  5. Secure using the screws or bolts removed earlier.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the the shifter knob to the shift lever.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

5, 6 and 7 Series Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim from under the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear trim plate or ashtray and disconnect the wires. Remove the screws from underneath.
  6.  
  7. Pull out the cassette holder, if equipped, and disconnect the wiring for the lights. Remove the retaining screws attaching the console to the floor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake lever boot and unfasten the screw in the compartment next to the lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the switches and disconnect any wiring. Remove the screw. Pull off the manual gear shift knob, or remove the screw from the automatic transmission shifter and remove.
  12.  
  13. Slide out the rear ashtray and remove the retaining screw underneath it.
  14.  
  15. Remove the center cover from the console horizontal section. Remove the radio and pull out the heater controls.
  16.  
  17. Install in reverse order taking care to install all the screws and harness connections.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
