REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1970-83 Models

All models equipped with power windows have an access plug on the door panel, which when removed will allow the window to be cranked in either direction with a suitable hex driver in the event the window fails to function.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the power mirror switch or remote mirror control bezel, if equipped. To remove the mirror switch, carefully pry it from the door panel. Disconnect the electrical lead from it.
  4.

The driver's door panel is the only panel to contain a mirror control switch

  1. If equipped with power windows, remove the window switch from the armrest. Disconnect the electrical wires from it.
  2.
  3. If equipped with manual windows, remove the window crank by removing the center panel on the handle and removing the retaining screw.
  4.
  5. Remove the screws retaining the armrest and remove the armrest from the door panel. On some models, the upper screw is hidden behind a piece of plastic. Carefully pry out the plastic piece to expose and remove the screws.
  6.
  7. Remove the screw securing the door handle to the interior latch assembly.
  8.
  9. Remove the screw in the plate around the inside door handle. Remove the plate from around the door handle.
  10.
  11. Remove the knob around the lock rod at the top of the panel.
  12.
  13. Remove the retaining screws at the bottom edge of the door panel and pull the panel off. Use care not to loose any of the retaining clips.
  14.
  15. The top panel can now be removed by using the following procedures:
    1. Remove the inside mirror cover, if equipped. Lift out the rear window channel slightly.
    2.
    3. Remove the screws along the bottom edge of the top trim panel.
    4.
    5. Remove the panel by lifting up on it and pulling out of the top of the door. Be careful not to loose any of the clips.
    6.

  16.
  17. If work is to be done on the inside of the door, remove the plastic sheeting from the door. This panel must be reinstalled when finished, it serves as a water barrier for the door panel.
  18.

To install:
  1. Install the top panel first, making sure the clips and screws are fully seated.
  2.
  3. Install the mirror cover and reinsert the window channel in position.
  4.
  5. Install the door panel, top first, by pushing in the areas where there are clips then screw the bottom in place.
