REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



6-Cylinder Models
EXCEPT 320i, 528e, 530i, 633i, 735i AND 1983-84 733i

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the brake caliper and leave the brake line connected.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake disc.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driving flange as follows:

  1. Disconnect the output shaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lockplate.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the collared nut and pull off the drive flange.
  6.  

  1. Tighten the collared nut and drive off the rear axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. Drive off the wheel bearings and seals toward the outside.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel bearings and seals. Install the drive flange and lockplate. Install the brake disc and caliper. Install the wheel.
  6.  

320i MODELS
  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cotter pin from the castellated nut.
  4.  
  5. Apply the handbrake.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the castellated nut.
  8.  
  9. Release the handbrake.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake drum.
  12.  
  13. Pull off the drive flange with a puller.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the output shaft and tie it up.
  16.  
  17. Drive out the halfshaft with a plastic hammer using the castellated nut to protect the end of the shaft.
  18.  
  19. Drive out the bearing and sealing ring.
  20.  
  21. Take out the spacer sleeve and shim.
  22.  

To install;
  1. Install bearing and seal ring, install the drive flange and connect the output shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the brake drum and tighten the castellated nut, use anew cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel.
  6.  

528e, 530i, 535i, 633CSi, 735i, M5, M6 AND 1983-84 733i
  1. Remove the rear wheel. Disconnect the output shaft at the outer flange and suspend it with wire.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt the caliper and suspend it with the brake line connected. Unbolt and remove the rear disc.
  4.  
  5. Remove the large nut and remove the lockplate. If the car has ABS, disconnect and then remove the ABS speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Use a special tool BMW 33 4 000 or equivalent and 2 M10 x 30 bolts to unscrew the collar nut. Then, pull off the drive flange with tools 00 7 501 and 00 7 502.
  8.  
  9. Screw on the collar nut until it is just flush with the end of the shaft and use a soft-tipped hammer to knock out the shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the circlip. Then, use special tools 33 4 031, 33 4 032 and 33 4 038 or equivalent to pull off the wheel bearings.
  12.  
  13. Pull the inner bearing race off the axle shaft with special tool 00 7 500 or equivalent.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Pull the new bearing assembly in with special tools 33 4 036, 33 4 032, and 33 4 038 or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Install special tool 33 4 037 or equivalent. Then, reinstall the circlip.
  4.  
  5. Pull the rear axle shaft through with special tools 23 1 300, 33 4 080 and 33 4 020 or equivalent.
  6.  
  7. Use special tool 33 4 000 or equivalent to tighten the collar nut.
  8.  
  9. Fit special tool 33 4 060 or equivalent into the lockplate and top it in with a slide hammer 00 5 000 or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the output shaft. Remount the brake disc and caliper.
