7 Series Models

If equipped with anti-lock brakes, expensive and specialized equipment is needed to bleed the ABS brake system. If you do not own or have access to this equipment, consult a suitably equipped professional who can perform this procedure.

  1. Remove the rear wheel.
  2.
  3. Apply the parking brake to hold the driveshaft stationary. Disconnect the output shaft at the drive flange. Hang the shaft from the body by a piece of wire.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the lever.
  6.
  7. Remove the float housing from the brake fluid reservoir and then remove as much fluid as possible from the reservoir, using a syringe used only for brake fluid (or a new one).
  8.
  9. Pull the brake cable housing out of the mounting bracket near the control arm. Disconnect the brake line.
  10.
  11. On 735i models with ABS, carefully, pull the wiring for the pulse transmitter out of its mount so it will be possible to unplug it.
  12.
  13. Support the trailing arm from underneath in a secure manner.
  14.
  15. Remove the nuts and then remove the 2 through bolts to disconnect the control arm from the rear axle carrier.
  16.
  17. If the car has a stabilizer bar, remove the bolts and remove the attaching bracket for the stabilizer bar.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the shock absorber and remove the control arm.
  20.

To install:
  1. Install the shock absorber in position under the vehicle. When reattaching the control arm, insert the bolt on the inner bracket first. Finally, tighten all mounting bolts with the car resting on its wheels. Tighten the bolts attaching the control arm to the axle carrier to 49-54 ft. lbs. (64-70 Nm). Refill and bleed the brake system.
