REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1600, 2000, 2002, 2500, 2800, Bavaria, 3000 and 3.0 Models
  1. Loosen the bolt and locking nut connecting the coupling flange to the steering column and remove to separate the column from the rack.
  2.

On the 2002, do not reuse self-locking nuts.

  1. Remove the castle nut and press off the left track rod from the center track rod.
  2.
  3. Press the center track rod from the steering drop arm.
  4.
  5. Detach and remove the steering box from the front axle beam.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install the steering box to the front axle beam and attach the drop arm to the track rod. Connect the left track rod to the center track rod.
  2.
  3. Connect the steering column coupling to the steering box flange.
  4.

The steering wheel must be in the straight ahead position and the markings on the steering box and the pitman shaft must align.

320i Models
  1. Loosen the front wheels.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.
  5. Remove the cotter pins, if equipped, and castle nut from the steering knuckles.
  6.
  7. Press the tie rods off of the steering knuckles.
  8.
  9. Loosen and remove the nut and bolt securing the universal joint at the steering column to the steering rack. Separate the steering column from the steering rack.
  10.
  11. Remove the retainer bolts attaching the steering rack to the vehicle body.
  12.
  13. Lift the rack away from the car. Inspect the steering boots, and replace any that are torn or excessively cracked.
  14.

To install:
  1. Install the steering rack to the vehicle and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the retainer bolts securely.
  2.
  3. Attach the steering column universal joint to the steering rack, making sure the splines on each align correctly, and the nut and bolt slide through the mounting holes easily. Do not force any part. If necessary separate the parts and try again.
  4.
  5. Attach the tie rods to the steering knuckles. Install the castle nuts and cotter pins to the tie rods. Install the front wheel.
  6.
  7. Have the vehicle front end alignment checked.
  8.

ADJUSTMENT

1600, 2000, 2002, 2500, 2800, Bavaria, 3000 and 3.0 Models
  1. Remove the air intake filter on 2002 models.
  2.
  3. Position the front wheels straight ahead.
  4.
  5. The marking on the worm shaft must be in alignment with the marking on the steering box.
  6.
  7. Remove the castle nut and press the left hand tie rod from the center tie rod.
  8.
  9. Remove the castle nut and press the center tie rod from the drop arm with special tool 7009, or the equivalent.
  10.
  11. Remove the steering wheel center and install a friction gauge.
  12.
  13. Turn the steering wheel one turn to the left from the straight ahead position. In this position the worm cannot be pressed one-sided into its bearing by the steering roller shaft, which might indicate absence of play.
  14.
  15. Turn the adjustment screw until the specified friction coefficient is reached when passing through the straight ahead position.
  16.

320i Models
  1. Remove the steering gear from the car.
  2.
  3. Clamp the special tool 32 1 100, or equivalent, in a vise and place the steering gear assembly into the tool.
  4.
  5. Unscrew the nut on the steering damper and slide it back.
  6.
  7. Remove the cap and unscrew the socket head cap about 12mm.
  8.
  9. Pressure pad adjustment:
    1. Remove the cotter pin. Tighten the set screw with special 32 1 100, or equivalent, and a tighten wrench, to 4 ft. lbs. (52 Nm). Loosen the set screw by one full castle slot to align the cotter pin bore.
    2.
    3. Use special tools 32 1 00 and 00 2 000 or equivalent to move rack to the left and right over the entire stroke and check for sticking and hooking. If this is the case, loosen the set screw by one more castle slot and insert the cotter pin.
    4.
    5. Repeat the test. If there is still sticking or hooking, replace rack, drive pinion or the entire steering gear. Never loosen the screw by 2 castle slots regardless of circumstances.
    6.

  10.
  11. Turning torque adjustment:
    1. Move rack to the center position. Place special tools 00 2 000 and 32 1 000 or equivalent on the drive pinion, check the turning torque. If it is not between 8-11 ft. lbs. (9-14 Nm), adjust the set screw.
    2.
    3. Turn to the right to increase friction, and turn to the left to decrease friction.
    4.
    5. Install the cap.
    6.
