Normally, the use of special factory tools is avoided for repair procedures, since these are not readily available for the do-it-yourself mechanic. When it is possible to perform the job with more commonly available tools, it will be pointed out, but occasionally, a special tool was designed to perform a specific function and should be used. Before substituting another tool, you should be convinced that neither you safety nor the performance of the vehicle will be compromised.
Some special tools are available commercially from major tool manufacturers. Others can be purchased from your dealer.
The special tools required for work on your BMW are confined primarily to rebuilding the cylinder head. A compression frame permits all the valves to be opened fully at once for easy camshaft removal. There are also guide pins used for removal of the rocker shaft assembly, and various punches used in removing and installing valve guides. These tools will be described and pictured in the procedures to which they apply.
No special tools are required for routine maintenance or minor work except the valve adjusting rod, which is included in the BMW tool kit supplied with the car.
