Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Set the steering gear in the straight ahead position by aligning the marks on the steering gear and spindle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Nuts from the left and right engine support arms and raise the engine slightly
     
    2 bolts accessible through holes in frame
     
    Lower clamping screw
     
    Steering gear clamps (after locking wheels in straight-ahead position)
     
    Tie rod by pressing it off with special tool 32-3-090
     
    Stabilizer end-links
     
    Heat shield from power steering gear
     
    Hydraulic lines, set aside and secure
     
    Electrical connector on EH converter
     
    If necessary, pressure line from front axle carrier
     
    Self-locking nuts and brace the front axle support
     
    Banjo bolts and slide the steering gear out through the left wheel opening

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear through the left side wheel opening
  2.  
  3. Install new sealing rings and banjo bolts. Torque the bolts as follows:
    1. M10: 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M14: 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.  
    5. M16: 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
    6.  
    7. M18: 34 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front axle support screws. Torque the screws to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    Self-locking nuts. Torque the nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    Tie rod. Torque the castle nut to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Steering gear to the spindle. Torque the fastener to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Steering gear clamp
     
    Engine support arm nuts. Torque the nuts to 60 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Splash guard
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
