Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 3 minutes before continuing with removal of air bag.
    WARNING
    Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed pyrotechnical Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) component. There is also a risk of the seat belt tensioner deploying. Pyrotechnical SRS components must never be taken apart, repaired, or transferred to another vehicle.

  5. To remove the air bag module:

    Remove the Torx screws at the back of the steering which hold the air bag. Use Torx socket T30

    Tilt airbag unit forwards and disconnect plug connections (1) and (2)
     
    Remove airbag module

  7. Move steering wheel/wheels to straight-ahead position.
  8.  
  9. Remove bolt in center of steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove steering wheel.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Move steering wheel/wheels to straight-ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Fit steering wheel into proper position.
    NOTE
    Markings on the steering wheel and steering spindle must match up. The retaining pins must also appear in the openings in the steering wheel.

  5. Tighten steering wheel bolt to 46 inch lbs. (63 Nm).

  7. To install the air bag module:
    CAUTION
    Ensure that the wiring is not trapped during installation.



    Tilt air bag module, bottom first, into steering wheel
     
    Connect the electrical connections
     
    Press air bag module into place
     
    Install Torx screws into air bag module from behind steering wheel. Use Torx socket T30. Tighten to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm)

  9. Check that the SRS is functioning properly:
    1. Install the battery negative lead.
    2.  
    3. Check that the SRS indicator lamp is not defective by turning the ignition key on.
    4.  
    5. The SRS indicator lamp must light and go out after approximately seven seconds.
    6.  
    7. Check that the SRS indicator lamp in the combined instrument panel is not constantly lit. Fault-trace the SRS if the lamp is constantly lit.
