Camshaft (Cylinder Head) Cover

Removal & Installation



3.0L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine appearance cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Ignition coils, Removal & Installation-.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiring harnesses of the ignition coils from the cylinder head cover and place to one side.
  8.  
  9. Pull of the engine breather hose from the cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the grounding straps.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cylinder head cover.

To install:

  1. Remove all of the old gasket material from the cylinder head cover and cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Apply new liquid gasket material to the left and right sides at the transitions between the cylinder head and VANOS adjustment unit, at the transition to the half-moon section at the VANOS adjustment unit and at the transition to the half-moon sections at the rear of the cylinder head.

  5. Install the cylinder head cover with a new gasket.
    NOTE
    Make sure the gasket is correctly seated on the front and rear ends of the cylinder head.

  7. Install the mounting bolts to align the cover and hand-tighten.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bolts crosswise from the inside to the outside.
  10.  
  11. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  12.  

4.4L (M62) And 4.6L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Turn the toggle latches 90°, lift off the cover, remove the screws and remove the heater bulkhead.

  5. Remove the acoustic cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air intake assembly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the positive battery cable lay to one side.
  10.  
  11. Remove the washer fluid tank or heater hoses from the clips for clearance as needed.
    NOTE
    Do not disconnect the heater hoses.

  13. Disconnect the vent line for the front differential.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Ignition coils, Removal & Installation-.

  17. Detach the vent hose if required for clearance.
  18.  
  19. Unfasten the left and right cable ducts and fold inwards.
  20.  
  21. Remove the mounting bolts and remove cylinder head covers and gaskets.

To install:

  1. Remove all of the old gasket material from the cylinder head cover and cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Coat the inner grooves and sealing face of the cylinder head cover with a liquid gasket material.
  4.  
  5. Press in a new internal gasket into the groove starting in the corners and working your way in towards the center.
  6.  
  7. Press a new outer gasket loosely beginning with the corner and working your way around.
  8.  
  9. Apply liquid gasket material on the cylinder at all joint surfaces and half-moon sections.
  10.  
  11. Install the cylinder head cover and ensure the side of the gasket is correctly seated on the front and rear of the cylinder head.
  12.  
  13. Install two the mounting bolts shown to align the cover. Install the remaining mountings bolts and tighten crosswise from the inside to the outside.
  14.  
  15. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  16.  

4.4L (N62) And 4.8L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine appearance cover and acoustic cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the center edge compartment partition wall.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil covers.
  8.  
  9. Unclip the cables from the cable holder. Pull the tank venting valve off the holder.
  10.  
  11. Unlock the plugs of the electrical connectors, disconnect and place aside.
  12.  
  13. After removing the electrical connectors, remove the sensors.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Ignition coils, Removal & Installation-.

  17. Remove both grounding cables.
  18.  
  19. Unlock and detach the vent hose.
  20.  
  21. Unclip the lower cable duct and remove the cable from the holder.
  22.  
  23. Remove the servo motor for eccentric shaft. Remove the spacer and sealing ring.
  24.  
  25. Remove the fuel rail. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Fuel Rail, Removal & Installation-.

  27. Remove the oil dipstick, if necessary.
  28.  
  29. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the cylinder head.
    NOTE
    Matchmark the mounting bolts when removing as they are not identical.

To install:

  1. Remove all of the old gasket material from the cylinder head cover and cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Replace the sealing ring. Press into the cylinder head cover until flush.

  5. Press a new gasket loosely beginning with the corner and working your way around.
  6.  
  7. Replace all of the spark plug domes in the cylinder head.. Coat the rubber seals with Molykote® or equivalent.

  9. Apply liquid gasket material to the joint areas and half-moon sections of the cylinder head surface.
  10.  
  11. Replace all of the sealing elements of the cylinder head cover.

  13. Install the cylinder head cover to the cylinder head and ensure the gasket is seated properly in the front and rear.
  14.  
  15. Install the cylinder head mounting bolts, replacing all the bolts identified as (3) in the illustration. Hand-tighten the bolts at first to align the cover. Then tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence from the inside to the outside.
