Removal & Installation



3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Drain cooling system
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Coolant pipe from side of block
     
    Double VANOS adjustment unit and camshafts with bearings
     
    Timing case cover-to- cylinder head bolts
     
    Timing chain guide
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the cylinder head bolts in reverse of sequence shown and remove the cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Clean all sealing material from mating faces
  2.  


CAUTION
There must be no oil in the cylinder head bolt holes in the block and timing case cover or there is a possibility of cracking and distorting torque values.

  1. Be sure that dowel sleeve are correctly positioned in block.
  2.  
  3. Apply permanently elastic sealing compound, Drei Bond 1209, at joints to timing case cover.
  4.  
  5. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  6.  
  7. Position the cylinder head onto the block and install new cylinder head bolts, applying a light coat of oil to the washer contact area and the threads of the new bolts.
  8.  
  9. Tighten cylinder head bolts, following the sequence shown, in 3 steps, to the following:
    1. Step 1: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Additional 90 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Additional 90 degrees.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Timing chain guide
     
    Timing case cover-to-cylinder head bolts
     
    Camshafts
     
    Double VANOS adjustment unit
     

  12.  
  13. Complete installation in reverse of the removal procedure.
  14.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Intake manifold

    Coolant pipe from side of block
     
    Double VANOS adjustment unit and camshafts with bearings
     
    Timing case cover-to- cylinder head bolts
     
    Timing chain guide

  7. Remove the cylinder head bolts in reverse of sequence shown and remove the cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Clean all sealing material from mating faces

4.4L & 4.6L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Engine cover
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Upper section of suction filter housing with Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Lower section of suction filter housing
     
    Battery positive lead from firewall connection and lay aside
     
    Left cylinder head cover
     
    Washer fluid reservoir
     
    Right cylinder head cover
     
    Water hoses from heater valve
     
    Vent line for front axle differential
     
    Positive lead
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Vent hose from cylinder head
     
    Left and right cable ducts and fold inward
     
    Both cylinder head covers
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Left side camshaft VANOS adjustment unit
     

  8.  
  9. Install special tool, 11-5-180, and pull back until the flywheel is no longer secured.
  10.  
  11. Lift the timing chain and hold it under tension.
  12.  
  13. Crank the engine, at the crank pulley bolt against the direction of rotation, to 45 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).
  14.  
  15. Remove the special tools.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Guide rail from the cylinder head
     
    Cylinder head bolts in reverse of the tightening sequence illustrated
     
    Cylinder head

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean all mounting surfaces and check the head for warpage. Take care not to drop any pieces of gasket or debris into the oil or coolant passages. Check the condition of the head locating dowel sleeves and clean out the bolt threads with a tap.
  2.  
  3. Apply a permanently elastic sealant, Drei Bond 1209, to joint between engine block and timing case cover.
  4.  
  5. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  6.  
  7. Mount the cylinder head on the block and install new bolts. Apply a light coat of clean oil to the threads and washer area.
  8.  
  9. Torque the bolts in the sequence illustrated in 3 steps as follows:
    1. Step 1: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 80 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: 80 degrees.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install and tighten the guide rail screw.
  12.  
  13. Carefully rotate the camshafts until the markings on end of camshafts face upward.
  14.  
  15. Install special tools, 11-2-446/442, and set camshaft position.
  16.  
  17. Align camshafts, using an open-end wrench on camshaft flats, until there is no gap between special tools and cylinder head.
  18.  
  19. Install a locking tool, 11-2-443, in front of other camshaft tools and bolt into position.
  20.  
  21. Lift the timing chain and hold it under tension.
  22.  
  23. Crank the engine from the 45° BTDC position to Top Dead Center (TDC), in the direction of rotation.
  24.  
  25. Push tool into flywheel to lock this position.
  26.  
  27. Install or connect the following:

    Left side camshaft adjustment unit
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head cover and torque the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  28.  
  29. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  30.  
  31. Change the engine oil and filter.
  32.  
  33. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair as necessary.
  34.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Right side exhaust manifold
     
    Engine cover
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Upper section of suction filter housing with Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Lower section of suction filter housing
     
    Battery positive lead from firewall connection and lay aside
     
    Left cylinder head cover
     
    Washer fluid reservoir
     
    Right cylinder head cover
     
    Water hoses from heater valve
     
    Vent line for front axle differential
     
    Positive lead
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Vent hose from cylinder head
     
    Left and right cable ducts and fold inward
     
    Both cylinder head covers
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Fan clutch and impeller
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Right side camshaft VANOS adjustment unit
     

  8.  
  9. Install special tool 11-5-180 and pull back until the flywheel is no longer secured.
  10.  
  11. Lift the timing chain and hold it under tension.
  12.  
  13. Crank the engine at the central bolt against the direction of rotation to 45° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).
  14.  
  15. Remove the special tools from camshafts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cylinder head bolts in reverse of the tightening sequence shown.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cylinder head.

To install:

    3. Step 2: 80 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: 80 degrees.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Rotate the camshafts until markings are facing upward.
  10.  
  11. Install special tools, 11-2-441/445, and set camshaft position.
  12.  
  13. Align camshafts, using an open-end wrench on camshaft flats, until there is no gap between special tools and cylinder head.
  14.  
  15. Install a locking tool, 11-2-443, in front of other camshaft tools and bolt into position.
  16.  
  17. Lift the timing chain and hold it under tension.
  18.  
  19. Crank the engine in direction of rotation to Top Dead Center (TDC).
  20.  
  21. Push tool into flywheel to lock this position.
  22.  
  23. Install or connect the following:

    Left side camshaft adjustment unit
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head cover. Torque the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  24.  
  25. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  26.  
  27. Change the engine oil and filter.

    Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
     

  28.  

4.4L (M62) & 4.6L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Engine cover
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Upper section of suction filter housing with Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Lower section of suction filter housing
     
    Battery positive lead from firewall connection and lay aside
     
    Left cylinder head cover
     
    Washer fluid reservoir
     
    Right cylinder head cover
     
    Water hoses from heater valve
     
    Vent line for front axle differential
     
    Positive lead
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Vent hose from cylinder head
     
    Left and right cable ducts and fold inward
     
    Both cylinder head covers

  9. Install special tool, 11-5-180, and pull back until the flywheel is no longer secured.
  10.  
  11. Lift the timing chain and hold it under tension.
  12.  
  13. Crank the engine, at the crank pulley bolt against the direction of rotation, to 45 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).
  14.  
  15. Remove the special tools.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:

  11. Install and tighten the guide rail screw.

  27. Install or connect the following:

    Left side camshaft adjustment unit
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head cover and torque the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  28.  
  29. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  30.  
  31. Change the engine oil and filter.
  32.  
  33. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair as necessary.
  34.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

  23. Install or connect the following:

    Left side camshaft adjustment unit
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head cover. Torque the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  24.  
  25. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  26.  
  27. Change the engine oil and filter.

    Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
     

  28.  

4.4L (N62) & 4.8L Engines
Left Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Ignition Coils, Removal & Installation-.
  8.  
  9. Remove the servomotor for the left eccentric shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Intake Manifold, Removal & Installation-.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left cylinder head cover. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Cylinder Head Cover, Removal & Installation-.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left timing case cover. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Timing Chain Cover & Seal, Removal & Installation-.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the wiring harness and lay to one side.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spark plugs.
  20.  
  21. Remove the vent hose from the cylinder head.
  22.  
  23. Detach the hose from the check valve.
  24.  
  25. Remove the left side camshaft adjustment unit.
  26.  
  27. Remove the eccentric shaft sensor.
  28.  
  29. Detach the guide rail from the cylinder head.
  30.  
  31. Remove the bolts between the cylinder head and timing chain cover.
  32.  
  33. Using a socket wrench with a short extension, remove the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
  34.  
  35. Lift off the cylinder head and gasket.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Clean the contact surfaces on the cylinder head and engine block of any old gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Coat any joints between the engine block and timing chain cover with liquid gasket material.
  4.  
  5. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  6.  
  7. Install the cylinder head. Install new bolts and tighten in the sequence shown as follows:
    1. Step 1: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Plus 80 degrees
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Plus another 80 degrees

  9. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.  

Right Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Ignition Coils, Removal & Installation-.
  8.  
  9. Remove the servomotor for the right eccentric shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Intake Manifold, Removal & Installation-.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right cylinder head cover. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Cylinder Head Cover, Removal & Installation-.
  14.  
  15. Remove the right timing case cover. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Timing Chain Cover & Seal, Removal & Installation-.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the wiring harness and lay to one side.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spark plugs.
  20.  
  21. Remove the vent hose from the cylinder head.
  22.  
  23. Detach the hose from the check valve.
  24.  
  25. Remove the right side camshaft adjustment unit.
  26.  
  27. Slacken off the chain tensioner piston by one turn.
  28.  
  29. Remove the right side eccentric shaft sensor.
  30.  
  31. Detach the guide rail from the cylinder head.
  32.  
  33. Remove the bolts between the cylinder head and timing chain cover.
  34.  
  35. Using a socket wrench with a short extension, remove the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
  36.  
  37. Lift off the cylinder head and gasket.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Clean the contact surfaces on the cylinder head and engine block of any old gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Coat any joints between the engine block and timing chain cover with liquid gasket material.
  4.  
  5. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  6.

  9. Install special tool 11-5-180 and pull back until the flywheel is no longer secured.

  11. Lift the timing chain and hold it under tension.
  12.  
  13. Crank the engine at the central bolt against the direction of rotation to 45 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).
  14.  
  15. Remove the special tools.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Guide rail from the cylinder head
     
    Cylinder head bolts in the proper sequence
     
    Cylinder head

  3. Mount the cylinder head on the block and use new bolts. Do not remove the coating on the head bolts, apply oil to the threads and torque the bolts in the following sequence:
    1. Step 1: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 80 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: 80 degrees.
    6.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Guide rail screw and rotate the camshafts until the markings face upward
     
    Camshaft sprockets and the timing chain tensioner. Torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Left side camshaft adjustment unit
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head cover. Torque the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Negative battery cable

  7. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Change the engine oil and filter.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair as necessary.
  12.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Right side exhaust manifold
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Fan clutch and impeller
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Right side cam adjustment unit
     

  8.  
  9. Install special tool 11-5-180 and pull back until the flywheel is no longer secured.
  10.  
  11. Lift the timing chain and hold it under tension.
  12.  
  13. Crank the engine at the central bolt against the direction of rotation to 45 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).
  14.  
  15. Remove the special tools.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Guide rail from the cylinder head
     
    Cylinder head bolts in the proper sequence
     
    Cylinder head

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean all mounting surfaces and check the head for warpage. Take care not to drop any pieces of gasket or debris into the oil or coolant passages. Check the condition of the head locating dowel sleeves and clean out the bolt threads with a tap.
    NOTE
    Refer to Section 1 of this manual for the cylinder head torque sequence illustration. The illustration is located after the Torque Specification Chart.

  3. Mount the cylinder head on the block and use new bolts. Do not remove the coating on the head bolts, apply oil to the threads and torque the bolts in the following sequence:
    1. Step 1: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 80 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: 80 degrees.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Guide rail screw and rotate the camshafts until the markings face upward
     
    Camshaft sprockets and the timing chain tensioner. Torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Left side camshaft adjustment unit
     
    Coolant manifold
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head cover. Torque the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Change the engine oil and filter.

    Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
