Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation




NOTE
BMW refers to the crankshaft seals as -radial- seals.

3.0L Engine
  1. Remove the crankshaft damper. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Crankshaft Damper, Removal & Installation-.
  2.  
  3. Install Special Tool 11-2-383 to the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Fit Special Tool 11-2-385 to the crankshaft and align the groove with the featherkey of the crankshaft.

  6.  
  7. Screw on Special Tool 11-2-380 until it is securely connected to the crankshaft seal. Remove the seal by tightening the bolt.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Coat the sealing lips of the new crankshaft front seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Use Special Tool 11-1-280 to install the seal until it is flush with the timing chain cover.

  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft damper.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

4.4L (M62) & 4.6L Engines
  1. Remove the crankshaft damper. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Crankshaft Damper, Removal & Installation-.
  2.  
  3. Install Special Tool 11-2-383 to the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Screw on Special Tool 11-2-380 until it is securely connected to the crankshaft seal. Remove the seal by tightening the bolt.

To install:

  1. Coat the sealing lips of the new crankshaft front seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Use Special Tool 11-1-220 to install the seal until it is flush with the timing chain cover.

  5. Install the crankshaft damper.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

4.4L (N62) & 4.8L Engines
  1. Remove the crankshaft damper. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Crankshaft Damper, Removal & Installation-.
  2.  
  3. Install Special Tool 11-9-410 to the crankshaft seal and turn the lever so it grips behind the seal.
  4.  
  5. Turn the center bolt of the seal removal tool to pop out the seal.

To install:


CAUTION
The sealing lip of the crankshaft seal is highly sensitive and must not be kinked or touched with your fingers at any time.

  1. Fit a new crankshaft seal on the timing chain cover.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 11-9-420, install the seal so it is flush with the timing chain cover.

  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
