Intake Manifold

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The intake manifold is vibrationally separated from the cylinder head by decoupling elements and gaskets.



    Both battery cables
     
    Acoustic cover
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Intake filter housing
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Wiring harness from the intake manifold
     
    Air injection vacuum control hoses
     
    Throttle body vacuum hose
     
    Fuel feed line from the injection pipe
     
    Engine ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover
     
    Engine ventilation hose from the oil separator
     
    Brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Oil separator from the cover
     
    Decoupling elements from under the intake manifold
     
    Oil drain hose from the rear cover after raising the intake manifold slightly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Decoupling elements to the cylinder head
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Remaining components of the decoupling elements. Torque the M6 nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm), the M7 nuts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and the M8 nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Oil drain hose to the rear cover
     
    Oil separator
     
    Brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Engine vent hose to the oil separator and the cylinder head
     
    Fuel feed line to the injection pipe
     
    Throttle body vacuum hose
     
    Air injection vacuum control hoses
     
    Wiring harness to the intake manifold
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Intake filter housing
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Acoustic cover
     
    Both battery cables
     

  2.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Oxygen (O2s) sensor connectors (mark connector locations before removing)
     
    Wiring from clips on intake manifold
     
    Battery positive lead from intake manifold
     
    Battery positive lead retainer
     
    Vent hose from cylinder head cover
     
    Retainer from top of engine and connection for intake air temperature sensor
     
    Fuel injector terminal strip and place aside
     
    Tank venting valve located near the dipstick
     
    Fuel line from clip and connection to pipe located near the water pump
     
    Dipstick tube guide
     
    Return line from dipstick tube
     
    Throttle assembly
     
    Knock sensor connector and nut on manifold support
     
    Intake manifold nuts
     
    Vacuum line on reverse side of intake manifold, if equipped
     
    Intake manifold
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Check all intake manifold gaskets and replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the rubber dampers at manifold connection and replace if needed.
  4.  
  5. Install intake manifold and torque bolts as follows:
    1. M6 bolts: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M7 bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    4.  
    5. M8 bolts: 16 Nm (22 Nm).

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Knock sensor connector and manifold support nut
     
    Throttle assembly
     
    Return line to dipstick tube
     
    Dipstick tube guide
     
    Fuel line to clip and connection to pipe located near the water pump
     
    Tank venting valve located near the dipstick
     
    Fuel injector terminal strip
     
    Retainer to top of engine and connection for intake air temperature sensor
     
    Vent hose to cylinder head cover
     
    Battery positive lead retainer
     
    Battery positive lead to intake manifold
     
    Wiring to clips on intake manifold
     
    O2s sensor connectors
     
    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Oxygen (O 2 s) sensor connectors (mark connector locations before removing)
     
    Wiring from clips on intake manifold
     
    Battery positive lead from intake manifold
     
    Battery positive lead retainer
     
    Vent hose from cylinder head cover
     
    Retainer from top of engine and connection for intake air temperature sensor
     
    Fuel injector terminal strip and place aside
     
    Tank venting valve located near the dipstick
     
    Fuel line from clip and connection to pipe located near the water pump
     
    Dipstick tube guide
     
    Return line from dipstick tube
     
    Throttle assembly
     
    Knock sensor connector and nut on manifold support
     
    Intake manifold nuts
     
    Vacuum line on reverse side of intake manifold, if equipped
     
    Intake manifold

To install:

  1. Check all intake manifold gaskets and replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the rubber dampers at manifold connection and replace if needed.
  4.  
  5. Install intake manifold and torque bolts as follows:
    1. M6 bolts: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M7 bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

    5. M8 bolts: 16 Nm (22 Nm).

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Knock sensor connector and manifold support nut
     
    Throttle assembly
     
    Return line to dipstick tube
     
    Dipstick tube guide
     
    Fuel line to clip and connection to pipe located near the water pump
     
    Tank venting valve located near the dipstick
     
    Fuel injector terminal strip
     
    Retainer to top of engine and connection for intake air temperature sensor
     
    Vent hose to cylinder head cover
     
    Battery positive lead retainer
     
    Battery positive lead to intake manifold
     
    Wiring to clips on intake manifold
     
    O 2 s sensor connectors
     
    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

4.4L & 4.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Heater bulkhead
     
    Engine cover
     
    Ignition coil covers (pry plug from cylinder head cover) and electrical connectors
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Intake filter housing
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Wiring harness from the intake manifold
     
    Air injection vacuum control hoses
     
    Throttle body vacuum hose
     
    Fuel feed line from the injection pipe
     
    Engine ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover
     
    Engine ventilation hose from the oil separator
     
    Brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Oil separator from the cover
     
    Decoupling elements from under the intake manifold
     
    Oil drain hose from the rear cover after raising the intake manifold slightly
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Vent pipe from intake manifold, if necessary

NOTE
The intake manifold is vibrationally separated from the cylinder head by decoupling elements and gaskets.

To install:

  1. Install the decoupling elements to the cylinder head
  2.  
  3. Position the intake manifold
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components of the decoupling elements. Torque the nuts as follows:
    1. M6 nuts: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M7 nuts: 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    4.  
    5. M8 nuts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    6.

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil drain hose to the rear cover
     
    Oil separator
     
    Brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Engine vent hose to the oil separator and the cylinder head
     
    Fuel feed line to the injection pipe
     
    Throttle body vacuum hose
     
    Air injection vacuum control hoses
     
    Wiring harness to the intake manifold
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Intake filter housing
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Engine cover
     
    Heater bulkhead
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine cover

    Air injection vacuum control hoses
     
    Throttle body vacuum hose

    Brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Oil separator from the cover
     
    Decoupling elements from under the intake manifold
     
    Oil drain hose from the rear cover after raising the intake manifold slightly
     
    Intake manifold

To install:

  1. Install the decoupling elements to the cylinder head
  2.  
  3. Position the intake manifold
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components of the decoupling elements. Torque the nuts as follows:
    1. M6 nuts: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M7 nuts: 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    4.  
    5. M8 nuts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil drain hose to the rear cover
     
    Oil separator
     
    Brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Engine vent hose to the oil separator and the cylinder head
     
    Fuel feed line to the injection pipe
     
    Throttle body vacuum hose
     
    Air injection vacuum control hoses
     
    Wiring harness to the intake manifold
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Intake filter housing
     
    Throttle bellows
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Engine cover
     
    Heater bulkhead
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

4.4L (N62) & 4.8L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine appearance cover and acoustic cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the center heater bulkhead.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air intake assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel rail. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Fuel Rail, Removal & Installation-.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector for the differential pressure sensor and servomotor.
  12.  
  13. Detach the vent hose. Remove the cable from the holder.
  14.  
  15. Remove the intake manifold mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. With the help of an assistant, lift intake manifold upwards and remove.

To install:

  1. Clean the contact surfaces of the manifold of any old gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Install the intake manifold with new gaskets.
  4.  
  5. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
