Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    To remove the upper section of the oil pan, proceed with the following steps.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Oil level switch plug
     
    Cable guide clips
     
    Lower oil pan section
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper nuts on the left and right engine mounts
     
    Front splash guard
     
    Positive battery cable from the starter
     
    Left and right swivel bearings
     
    Output shafts
     
    Bearing pedestal from the right output shaft
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Steering spindle from the steering gear and support the front axle
     
    Front axle support from the engine carrier and slightly lower the axle support
     
    Drive belt
     
    Vane pump from the oil pan
     
    Adjustable plate from the oil pan after releasing the tension from the A/C compressor belt
     
    Guide tube for the oil dipstick
     
    Oil return line from the oil separator to the oil pan
     
    Oil pump snorkel
     
    Cable guide for the positive lead
     
    Upper oil pan section towards the rear of the vehicle
     

  8.  

To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Check the seals on the oil pipes and replace it if necessary. Lubricate the seals with oil.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Install upper oil pan. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and lower the engine
     
    Cable guide for the positive lead
     
    Banjo bolt for the oil return pipe from the oil filter at the oil pan
     
    Drive belt
     
    Left and right engine mounts Torque the bottom bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Lower oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the bolts, beginning in the middle and working to the outside to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Plug for the level switch, making sure to replace the O-ring
     
    Steering spindle to the steering gear
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Bearing pedestal
     
    Output shafts
     
    Positive battery cable
     
    Engine splash guards
     
    Oil dipstick guide tube, making sure to replace the O-ring
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  10.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bulkhead heater
     
    Cover over fuel injectors
     
    Upper section of suction filter housing with Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     

  6.  
  7. Attach an engine lift and hoist to engine.
  8.  
  9. Remove top left and right nuts on engine mounts
  10.  
  11. Raise the engine about 0.15 inch (5mm).
  12.  
  13. Remove and disconnect the following:

    Front splash guard
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Left and right swivel bearings
     
    Output shafts
     
    Propeller shaft at front
     
    Alternator drive belt from belt pulley for vane pump
     
    Power steering pump and move aside with the lines still connected
     
    Return hose from oil separator
     
    Dipstick tube
     
    Steering spindle from steering gear tie rods
     

  14.  
  15. Temporarily reinstall the left and right swivel bearings and connect with a bolt to the spring strut.
  16.  
  17. Support the entire front axle assembly.
  18.  


NOTE
The steering gear will remain bolted to the front axle support. Return hose must not be over-stretched when front axle is lowered.

  1. Detach front axle support from engine carrier and lower about 3-4 inches (90-100mm).
  2.  
  3. Remove the front axle differential.
  4.  
  5. Release the screws on the oil pan.
  6.  
  7. Move the pan backward when removing.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Ensure mating surfaces are clean.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket and position the oil pan in place.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten the oil pan bolts, but do not fully tighten the transmission end bolts.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the engine end bolts, then tighten the transmission end bolts.
  8.  
  9. Restore the front axle assembly to position.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the steering gear tie rods.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Dipstick tube
     
    Return hose from oil separator
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Alternator drive belt
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Output shafts
     
    Swivel bearings
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Splash guard
     

  14.  
  15. Reposition the engine onto the mount and torque the upper nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the engine hoist
  18.  
  19. Install the upper section of suction filter housing with MAF sensor
  20.  
  21. Install the cover of the fuel injectors.
  22.  
  23. Install the bulkhead heater.
  24.  
  25. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  26.  
  27. Refill the engine oil.
  28.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bulkhead heater
     
    Cover over fuel injectors
     
    Upper section of suction filter housing with Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     

  6.  
  7. Attach an engine lift and hoist to engine.
  8.  
  9. Remove top left and right nuts on engine mounts
  10.  
  11. Raise the engine about 0.15 inch (5mm).
  12.  
  13. Remove and disconnect the following:

    Front splash guard
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Left and right swivel bearings
     
    Output shafts
     
    Propeller shaft at front
     
    Alternator drive belt from belt pulley for vane pump
     
    Power steering pump and move aside with the lines still connected
     
    Return hose from oil separator
     
    Dipstick tube
     
    Steering spindle from steering gear tie rods

  15. Temporarily reinstall the left and right swivel bearings and connect with a bolt to the spring strut.

To install:

  5. Install and tighten the oil pan bolts, but do not fully tighten the transmission end bolts.

  7. Tighten the engine end bolts, then tighten the transmission end bolts.

  9. Restore the front axle assembly to position.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the steering gear tie rods.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Dipstick tube
     
    Return hose from oil separator
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Alternator drive belt
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Output shafts
     
    Swivel bearings
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Splash guard
     

  14.  
  15. Reposition the engine onto the mount and torque the upper nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the engine hoist
  18.  
  19. Install the upper section of suction filter housing with MAF sensor
  20.  
  21. Install the cover of the fuel injectors.
  22.  
  23. Install the bulkhead heater.
  24.  
  25. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  26.  
  27. Refill the engine oil.
  28.  

4.4L & 4.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Oil level switch plug
     
    Cable guide clips
     
    Lower oil pan section

NOTE
To remove the upper section of the oil pan, proceed with the following steps.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper nuts on the left and right engine mounts
     
    Front splash guard
     
    Positive battery cable from the starter
     
    Left and right swivel bearings
     
    Output shafts
     
    Bearing pedestal from the right output shaft
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Steering spindle from the steering gear and support the front axle
     
    Front axle support from the engine carrier and slightly lower the axle support
     
    Drive belt
     
    Vane pump from the oil pan
     
    Adjustable plate from the oil pan after releasing the tension from the A/C compressor belt
     
    Guide tube for the oil dipstick
     
    Oil return line from the oil separator to the oil pan
     
    Oil pump snorkel
     
    Cable guide for the positive lead
     
    Upper oil pan section towards the rear of the vehicle
     

  2.  

To install

  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  10.  

4.4L, 4.6L & 4.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    To remove the upper section of the oil pan, proceed with the following steps.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Reinforcement plate
     
    Oil level switch plug
     
    Cable guide clips
     
    Lower oil pan section
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper nuts on the left and right engine mounts
     
    Front splash guard
     
    Positive battery cable from the starter
     
    Left and right swivel bearings
     
    Output shafts
     
    Bearing pedestal from the right output shaft
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Steering spindle from the steering gear and support the front axle
     
    Front axle support from the engine carrier and slightly lower the axle support
     
    Drive belt
     
    Vane pump from the oil pan
     
    Adjustable plate from the oil pan after releasing the tension from the A/C compressor belt
     
    Guide tube for the oil dipstick
     
    Oil return line from the oil separator to the oil pan
     
    Oil pump snorkel
     
    Cable guide for the positive lead
     
    Upper oil pan section towards the rear of the vehicle
     

  8.  

To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Install upper oil pan. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and lower the engine.
