Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



The rear main bearing oil seal can be replaced after the transmission and flywheel has been removed from the engine.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Flywheel assembly
     
    Oil seal, using a suitable seal removal tool
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Coat the sealing lips of the new seal with oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New seal into the end cover housing with a suitable seal installation tool
     
    Flywheel
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with new fluid.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check that oil pressure is present; if the oil pressure lamp does not extinguish within 5-7 seconds of starting the engine, turn the engineOFF
  8.  
  9. Check and top off all fluid levels.
  10.

To install:

  1. Coat the sealing lips of the new seal with oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New seal into the end cover housing with a suitable seal installation tool
     
    Flywheel
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with new fluid.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check that oil pressure is present; if the oil pressure lamp does not extinguish within 5-7 seconds of starting the engine, turn the engine OFF .
  8.  
  9. Check and top off all fluid levels.
  10.  

3.0L, 4.4L (M62) & 4.6L Engines

The rear main bearing oil seal can be replaced after the transmission and flywheel has been removed from the engine.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Flywheel assembly
     
    Oil seal, using a suitable seal removal tool
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Coat the sealing lips of the new seal with oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New seal into the end cover housing with a suitable seal installation tool
     
    Flywheel
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with new fluid.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check that oil pressure is present; if the oil pressure lamp does not extinguish within 5-7 seconds of starting the engine, turn the engine OFF .
  8.  
  9. Check and top off all fluid levels.
  10.  

4.4L (N62) & 4.8L Engines
  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission assembly from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the end cover with rear main seal.
    NOTE
    The rear main seal is an integral part of the end cover and they must be replaced as a unit.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Lightly coat the running surface of the crankshaft with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Fit a new end cover with the support sleeve and carefully push the assembly onto the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the end cover mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission assembly into the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
