Removal & Installation



4.4L (N62) & 4.8L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the acoustic cover and ignition coil cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector on the servomotor.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt and remove the servomotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Ignition Coils, Removal & Installation-.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plugs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cylinder head cover. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Cylinder Head Covers, Removal & Installation-.

  15. Remove the upper timing chain cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the intake and exhaust adjustment unit.
  18.  
  19. Rotate the intake camshaft as follows:
    1. Left side: Against the direction of rotation until the lettering on 8th cylinder points upwards in the cylinder axis and the cam is horizontal (left side)
    2.  
    3. Right side: In the direction of rotation until the cam on the 1st cylinder is horizontal.

  21. Remove the nuts and remove bearing cap RE1 (left side) or LE1 (right side).

  23. Remove the eight nuts of the bearing bracket from the outside to the inside.

  25. Clamp Special Tool 11-9-470 in a vice to accept the bearing bracket.
  26.  
  27. Carefully lift out the bearing bracket and place on Special Tool 11-9-470 and secure with a nut.
    NOTE
    Keep all of the rocker arms in the correct order as they can only be reused in the same position.

  29. Remove the rocker arms.

To install:

  1. Install the rocker arms.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bearing bracket from the holding tool. Carefully lower the bracket onto the cylinder head. Install the nuts and hand tighten.
    NOTE
    The rocker arms may slip slightly when the bearing bracket is installed. Ensure the rocker arms are securely mounted on the hydraulic valve lash adjusters and on the valves.

  5. Tighten the bearing bracket nuts from the inside to the outside.
  6.  
  7. Install bearing cap RE1 (left side) or LE1 (right side) so the marking is legible from the intake side and tighten the nuts.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the intake camshaft as follows:
    1. Left side: In the direction of rotation until the marking on the cam on the 5th cylinder faces upward.
    2.  
    3. Right side: Against the direction of rotation until the cam on the 1st cylinder points downward.

  11. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
