Timing Chain Cover, Chain, Sprockets, & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    In the Top Dead Center (TDC) firing position, the inlet camshaft twists in the splines of the camshaft adjustment unit.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head covers
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil lines from the cylinder head
     
    Vibration damper and rotate the engine at the central bolt so that the first cylinder is at the TDC position.
     
    Timing chain tensioning piston
     
    Both top timing case covers
     
    Left hand threaded nut from the sensor gear on cylinder bank 1-4
     
    Left hand threaded nut from the sensor gear on cylinder bank 5-8
     

  8.  
  9. Slacken the screw connection for the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 by 1 / 2 turn.
  10.  
  11. Slacken the screw connection for the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 by 1 / 2 turn.
  12.  
  13. Slacken the screw connection for the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 by 1 / 2 turn.
  14.  
  15. Slacken the screw connection for the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 by 1 / 2 turn.
  16.  
  17. Align the camshafts and install special tool 11-2-445/441 to the camshafts on cylinder back 1-4.
  18.  
  19. Align the camshafts and install special tool 11-2-446/442 to the camshafts on cylinder back 5-8.
  20.  
  21. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Central bolt and hub from the vibration damper
     
    Oil pump
     
    Water pump and thermostat housing
     
    Bottom timing case cover
     
    Tensioning rail and oil guide
     
    Timing chain from the camshaft adjustment unit
     

  22.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing chain over the reversing rail, camshaft adjustment unit and crankshaft sprocket wheel for cylinder bank5-8
     
    Timing chain inside screw-in pin
     
    Timing chain onto the camshaft adjustment unit for cylinder bank 1-4

  3. Raise the timing chain slightly by the guide rail and slide the rail over the pin until the retaining lug can be heard snapping into place on the lower guide pin.
  4.  
  5. Align the timing chain to the guide rail.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil guide for the bow cover in the pivot rail.
  8.  
  9. Install the tensioning rail screw. Press the cover against the timing chain and secure the cover with the plastic strap.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Upper oil pan section and secure the crankshaft in the TDC position with special tool 11-5-180
     
    Special tool 11-7-380 to the right side cylinder bank and install special tool 11-4-230
     
    Adjustment screw into the tensioning rail and hand tighten
     
    Special tool 11-6-440 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 5-8 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
     

  12.  
  13. Tighten the screw connection on the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by 1 / 4 turn.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the screw connection on the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by 1 / 4 turn.
  16.  
  17. Special tool 11-6-440 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 1-4 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the screw connection on the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by 1 / 4 turn.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the screw connection on the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by 1 / 4 turn.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the tensioning rail by turning the adjusting screw on special tool 11-4-230.
    NOTE
    When the timing chain is pretensioned, the camshaft adjustment unit moves and must be reset to the left hand stop.

  24.  
  25. Tighten the inlet camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Tighten the exhaust camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install special tool 11-6-451 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 1-4 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the inlet camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 1-4 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Tighten the exhaust camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 1-4 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the sensor gear to cylinder bank 1-4 and hand tighten the nut.
  36.  
  37. Align the locating bore on the sensor gear to the positioning pin on special tool 11-6-451. Press the tool downward and align it to the cylinder head. Torque the sensor gear screw to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Remove the special tool.
  38.  
  39. Install special tool 11-6-452 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 5-8 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
  40.  
  41. Tighten the inlet camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Tighten the exhaust camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Install the sensor gear to cylinder bank 5-8 and hand tighten the nut.
  46.  
  47. Align the locating bore on the sensor gear to the positioning pin on special tool 11-6-452. Press the tool downward and align it to the cylinder head. Torque the sensor gear screw to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Remove the special tool.
  48.  
  49. Check for the correct seating of the dowel sleeves. Clean the sealing surfaces thoroughly, and then place a new gasket on the lower cover.
  50.  
  51. Trim the protruding ends of the gasket, making sure the cutting tool is level. Do not allow the pieces to fall into the engine.
  52.  
  53. Position the lower cover and install the mounting bolts with an even distribution of pressure. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm), 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and 10mm bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  54.  
  55. Install the oil seal in the timing case cover using tool No. 11-1-220. Make sure the seal is flush with the cover.
  56.  
  57. Install the vibration damper hub and install the mounting bolt. Tighten the hub bolt to:
    1. Step 1: 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: turn an additional 60 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: turn an additional 60 degrees.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: turn an additional 30 degrees.
    8.

  59. Position the vibration damper pulleys and install the mounting bolts for the damper.
  60.  
  61. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump pulley
     
    Drive belt and the cooling fan. Rotate the fan counterclockwise to install.
     
    Intake hose between the throttle body and the air volume meter
     
    Battery positive cable for the alternator and install the protective tube mounting fasteners and connect the remaining wires to the alternator
     
    Oil filter housing and the return pipe and replace the housing cover
     
    Alternator and cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  62.  
  63. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  64.  
  65. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary
  66.  

3.0L Engine

NOTE
This procedure covers lower timing case cover removal only. Procedure for removal of timing chain is covered under -Camshaft- for this engine.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Camshaft adjustment unit (Double VANOS), as described under -Camshaft.-
     
    Alternator drive belt tensioner and belt
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Vibration damper and hub, if equipped
     
    Oil pan
     

  6.  
  7. Drive out the dowel pins from the timing case cover toward the rear.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower timing case cover bolts from cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing case cover bolts and cover.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Check cylinder head and gasket for possible damage.
  2.  
  3. Clean all mating surfaces.
  4.  
  5. Drive dowel pins into timing case cover until they protrude about 0.08-0.12 inch (2-3mm).
  6.  
  7. Use grease to hold timing case cover in place during installation.
  8.  
  9. Apply sealing compound, Drei Bond 1209, to joints at cylinder head gasket left and right, and thinly and evenly to entire timing case cover sealing surface adjoining the cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Install all timing cover retaining bolts to about 3 ft. lbs. (5 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Drive in the dowel pins until flush.
  14.  
  15. Torque all timing cover retaining screws, in an alternating sequence, to the following:
    1. M6 bolts: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M7 bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    4.  
    5. M8 bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    6.  
    7. M10 bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Repeat the torque sequence a second time.
    10.

  17. Install and tighten the bolts connecting the timing case cover to the cylinder head.
  18.  
  19. Replace the crankshaft oil seal.
  20.  
  21. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Vibration damper and hub
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Drive belt tensioner and belt
     
    Camshaft (Double VANOS) adjustment unit
     
    Negative battery cable.
     

  22.  
  23. Refill the engine oil.
  24.  

4.4L & 4.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head covers
     

  6.  


NOTE
In the Top Dead Center (TDC) firing position, the inlet camshaft twists in the splines of the camshaft adjustment unit.



Oil lines from the cylinder head
 
Vibration damper and rotate the engine at the central bolt so that the first cylinder is at the TDC position.
 
Timing chain tensioning piston
 
Both top timing case covers
 
Left hand threaded nut from the sensor gear on cylinder bank 1-4
 
Left hand threaded nut from the sensor gear on cylinder bank 5-8
 

  1. Slacken the screw connection for the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 by12
  2.  
  3. Slacken the screw connection for the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 by12
  4.  
  5. Slacken the screw connection for the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 by12
  6.  
  7. Slacken the screw connection for the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 by12
  8.  
  9. Align the camshafts and install special tool 11-2-445/441 to the camshafts on cylinder back 1-4.
  10.  
  11. Align the camshafts and install special tool 11-2-446/442 to the camshafts on cylinder back 5-8.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Central bolt and hub from the vibration damper
     
    Oil pump
     
    Water pump and thermostat housing
     
    Bottom timing case cover
     
    Tensioning rail and oil guide
     
    Timing chain from the camshaft adjustment unit
     

  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing chain over the reversing rail, camshaft adjustment unit and crankshaft sprocket wheel for cylinder bank5-8
     
    Timing chain inside screw-in pin
     
    Timing chain onto the camshaft adjustment unit for cylinder bank 1-4

  3. Raise the timing chain slightly by the guide rail and slide the rail over the pin until the retaining lug can be heard snapping into place on the lower guide pin.

  5. Align the timing chain to the guide rail.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil guide for the bow cover in the pivot rail
     
    Tensioning rail screw. Press the cover against the timing chain and secure the cover with the plastic strap.
     
    Upper oil pan section and secure the crankshaft in the TDC position with special tool 11-5-180
     
    Special tool 11-7-380 to the right side cylinder bank and install special tool 11-4-230
     
    Adjustment screw into the tensioning rail and hand tighten
     
    Special tool 11-6-440 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 5-8 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
     

  8.  
  9. Tighten the screw connection on the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by14
  10.  
  11. Tighten the screw connection on the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 5-8 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by14
  12.  
  13. Special tool 11-6-440 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 1-4 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the screw connection on the inlet camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by14
  16.  
  17. Tighten the screw connection on the exhaust camshaft on cylinder bank 1-4 to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and back off by14
  18.  
  19. Tighten the tensioning rail by turning the adjusting screw on special tool 11-4-230.
  20.  


NOTE
When the timing chain is pretensioned, the camshaft adjustment unit moves and must be reset to the left hand stop.

  1. Tighten the inlet camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Tighten the exhaust camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install special tool 11-6-451 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 1-4 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the inlet camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 1-4 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the exhaust camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 1-4 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the sensor gear to cylinder bank 1-4 and hand tighten the nut.
  12.  
  13. Align the locating bore on the sensor gear to the positioning pin on special tool 11-6-451. Press the tool downward and align it to the cylinder head. Torque the sensor gear screw to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Remove the special tool.
  14.  
  15. Install special tool 11-6-452 to the camshaft adjustment unit on cylinder bank 5-8 and move it 31 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) to the left hand stop.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the inlet camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the exhaust camshaft screw connection on cylinder bank 5-8 to 85 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the sensor gear to cylinder bank 5-8 and hand tighten the nut.
  22.  
  23. Align the locating bore on the sensor gear to the positioning pin on special tool 11-6-452. Press the tool downward and align it to the cylinder head. Torque the sensor gear screw to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Remove the special tool.
  24.  
  25. Check for the correct seating of the dowel sleeves. Clean the sealing surfaces thoroughly, and then place a new gasket on the lower cover.
  26.  
  27. Trim the protruding ends of the gasket, making sure the cutting tool is level. Do not allow the pieces to fall into the engine.
  28.  
  29. Position the lower cover and install the mounting bolts with an even distribution of pressure. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm), 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and 10mm bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the oil seal in the timing case cover using tool No. 11-1-220. Make sure the seal is flush with the cover.
  32.  
  33. Install the vibration damper hub and install the mounting bolt. Tighten the hub bolt to:
    1. Step 1: 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: turn an additional 60 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: turn an additional 60 degrees.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: turn an additional 30 degrees.
    8.  

  34.  
  35. Position the vibration damper pulleys and install the mounting bolts for the damper.
  36.  
  37. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump pulley
     
    Drive belt and the cooling fan. Rotate the fan counterclockwise to install.
     
    Intake hose between the throttle body and the air volume meter
     
    Battery positive cable for the alternator and install the protective tube mounting fasteners and connect the remaining wires to the alternator
     
    Oil filter housing and the return pipe and replace the housing cover

  41. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary
