Fuel Injectors

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Acoustic cover
     
    Knock Sensor (KS) electrical connector from the cable strips
     
    Changeover valve electrical connector
     
    Camshaft (CMP) sensor electrical connector
     
    Left side cylinder head ignition coil cover
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Cable strip from the fuel injectors
     
    Vacuum accumulator lines
     
    Fuel line
     
    Both fuel injection pipe retaining brackets
     
    Fuel injectors from the fuel pipe
     

  6.  
  7. Check the O-rings on the fuel injectors and replace if damaged.

  9. If the O-rings are being replaced, coat the new O-ring with petroleum jelly.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel injectors to the fuel pipe
     
    Fuel line
     
    Vacuum lines to the vacuum accumulator
     
    Cable strip to the fuel injectors
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    CMP sensor electrical connector
     
    Changeover valve electrical connector
     
    KS electrical connector
     
    Acoustic cover
     
    Negative battery cable

  13. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  14.  

3.0L Engine

NOTE
This procedure involves removing the complete injection pipe with injectors.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Mark the locations of each oxygen sensor connector for proper reinstallation.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Connectors from clips on injection pipe
     
    Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector
     
    Plug connection on solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment (VANOS) unit
     
    Terminal strip for fuel injectors from injection pipe

  9. Unclip the fuel line from its holder, then unlock the fuel line from the cylinder head at the rear (be prepared to catch any fuel).
  10.  
  11. Remove the retaining bolts and remove the injection pipe with the fuel injectors.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Coat the sealing rings of the injectors with anti-seize compound prior to fitting.
  2.  
  3. Install the fuel injectors and fuel pipe to the engine.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel line
     
    Terminal strip to fuel injectors
     
    Connectors as removed
     
    Negative battery cable

4.4L & 4.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Acoustic cover
     
    Knock Sensor (KS) electrical connector from the cable strips
     
    Changeover valve electrical connector
     
    Camshaft (CMP) sensor electrical connector
     
    Left side cylinder head ignition coil cover
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Cable strip from the fuel injectors
     
    Vacuum accumulator lines
     
    Fuel line
     
    Both fuel injection pipe retaining brackets
     
    Fuel injectors from the fuel pipe
     

  6.  
  7. Check the O-rings on the fuel injectors and replace if damaged.

To install:

  1. If the O-rings are being replaced, coat the new O-ring with petroleum jelly.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel injectors to the fuel pipe
     
    Fuel line
     
    Vacuum lines to the vacuum accumulator
     
    Cable strip to the fuel injectors
     
    Ignition coil electrical connectors
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    CMP sensor electrical connector
     
    Changeover valve electrical connector
     
    KS electrical connector
     
    Acoustic cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
