Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Vibration damper
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Coolant hoses
     
    Water pump and discard the seal

To install:

  1. Clean and remove any residual debris or gasket material from the engine mounting surface for the water pump.
  2.  
  3. Install the water pump with a new gasket. Torque the bolts as follows:
    1. M6 bolts: 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M7 bolts: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    4.  
    5. M8 bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    6.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Coolant hoses to the water pump
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Vibration damper
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair as necessary.
  10.  

3.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the alternator drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system. Drain plug is located on exhaust side of block, next to cylinder number 2.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 4 water pump retaining bolts. Use 2 M6 bolts in holes next to mounting bolt holes and screw in until water pump releases from timing cover.
  10.  

To install:

  1. When installing, use a new O-ring.
  2.  
  3. Tighten mounting bolts as follows:
    1. M6 bolts: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M7 bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    4.  
    5. M8 bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    6.

  5. Install water pump pulley.
  6.  
  7. Refill cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Install the alternator drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair as necessary.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Remove the alternator drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system. Drain plug is located on exhaust side of block, next to cylinder number 2.

  7. Remove the water pump pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 4 water pump retaining bolts. Use 2 M6 bolts in holes next to mounting bolt holes and screw in until water pump releases from timing cover.
  10.  

To install:

  1. When installing, use a new O-ring.

  3. Tighten mounting bolts as follows:
    1. M6 bolts: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

    3. M7 bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

    5. M8 bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

  5. Install water pump pulley.
  6.  
  7. Refill cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Install the alternator drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair as necessary.
  12.  

4.4L & 4.6L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Vibration damper
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Coolant hoses
     
    Water pump and discard the seal

To install:

To install:

  7. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair as necessary.
  10.  

4.4L (N62) & 4.8L Engines



  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fan cowl.
  6.  
  7. Remove the electric fan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the vacuum line holder.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect all of the coolant hoses on the water pump.
  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the water pump pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft damper. For additional information, please refer to the following topic: -Crankshaft Damper, Removal & Installation-.
  20.  
  21. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the water pump.

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and contact surface of any gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Replace the gasket and sealing rings on the water pump.
  4.  
  5. Install the water pump.
  6.  
  7. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  8.  
  9. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
