Removal & Installation

3.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.
  5. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  6.
  7. Use the Flywheel Locking tool J-37096 in order to hold the flywheel.
  8.
  9. Remove the balancer bolt.
    NOTE
Do not separate the pulley from the balancer. Service the pulley and the balancer as an assembly.

  10.
  11. Use Balancer Remover J-38107-A in order to remove the crankshaft balancer. Attach 1/4 inch bolts to the pulley. Screw the bolts in 1/4 inch.
  12.
  13. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.
  14.

To install

  1. Install the crankshaft balancer. Lubricate the seal surface with engine oil.
  2.
  3. Use the J-37096 in order to hold the flywheel.
  4.
  5. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  6.
  7. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm). Tighten the bolt an additional 76 degrees.
  8.
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10.
  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.
  13. Perform the crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure as follows:
  14.
  15. Install a scan tool.
  16.
  17. Monitor the powertrain control module (PCM) for DTCs with a scan tool.
  18.
  19. Select the crankshaft position variation learn procedure with a scan tool.
  20.
  21. The scan tool instructs you to perform the following:
    1. Accelerate to wide open throttle (WOT).
    2.
    3. Release the throttle when fuel cut-off occurs.
    4.
    5. Observe the fuel cut-off specifications for the applicable engine.
    6.
    7. The engine should not accelerate beyond the calibrated RPM value.
    8.
    9. Release the throttle immediately if the value is exceeded.
    10.

  22.
  23. Block the drive wheels.
  24.
  25. Set the parking brake.
    1. DO NOT apply the brake pedal.
    2.
    3. Cycle the ignition from OFF to ON.
    4.
    5. Apply and hold the brake pedal.
    6.
    7. Start and idle the engine.
    8.
    9. Turn the A/C OFF.
    10.
    11. The vehicle must remain in Park or Neutral.
    12.
    13. The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the procedure. The scan tool only displays the condition that inhibits the procedure.
    14.

  26.
  27. Enable the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure with the scan tool and perform the following:
    NOTE
While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine responds to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.

    1. Accelerate to WOT.
    2.
    3. Release when fuel cut-off occurs.
    4.
    5. Test in progress.
    6.

  28.
  29. The scan tool displays Learn Status: Learned this ignition. If the scan tool indicates that DTC P0315 ran and passed, the CKP variation learn procedure is complete. If the scan tool indicates DTC P0315 failed or did not run, refer to DTC P0315.
  30.
  31. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully.
  32.
