4.6L Engine
Primary Camshaft Drive Chain Installation
  1. Install the primary camshaft drive chain on the camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket.
  2.  
  3. Align the timing marks of the camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. Ensure the marks are aligned vertically.
  4.  
  5. Ensure the number one piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) and the crankshaft pin is approximately at the one o'clock position using tool J 39946.
  6.  
  7. Install the primary camshaft drive chain, camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly onto the camshaft intermediate drive shaft and the crankshaft.

  9. Install the camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket bolt. Tighten the camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the primary camshaft drive chain guide.
  12.  
  13. Install the primary camshaft drive chain guide bolts. Tighten the primary camshaft drive chain guide bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Collapse the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Rotate the ratchet release lever counterclockwise and hold.
    2.  
    3. Collapse the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner shoe and hold.
    4.  
    5. Release the ratchet lever and slowly release the pressure on the shoe.
    6.  
    7. When the ratchet lever moves to the first detent a click should be heard and felt.
    8.  
    9. Insert a pin through the hole in the release lever in order to lock the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner shoe in the collapsed position.
      NOTE
      Ensure the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner release lever is facing out.

  17. Install the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  18.  
  19. Install the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts. Tighten the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Remove the pin in the release lever locking the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  22.  
  23. Ensure the timing marks are aligned vertically.
  24.  
  25. Place a small amount of sealant GM P/N 12345739, (Canadian P/N 10953541), or equivalent at the split line of the upper and lower crankcases.
  26.  
  27. Place the front cover gasket over the crankcase dowel pins.
  28.  
  29. Place the front cover in position on the crankcase.
  30.  
  31. Install the front cover retaining bolts.
  32.  
  33. Tighten the front cover retaining bolts in the sequence shown. Tighten the front cover retaining bolts in proper sequence to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

Primary Camshaft Drive Chain Removal
  1. Remove the camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket bolt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain guide bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain guide.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket, primary camshaft drive chain and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly.

Secondary Camshaft Drive Chain Installation-Left Side
  1. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  2.  
  3. Loosely install the lower left secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt.
  4.  
  5. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  6.  
  7. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt. Tighten the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain by sliding the chain down through the left cylinder head and placing the chain on the end of the camshafts.
  10.  
  11. Route the left secondary camshaft drive chain around the inner row of the intermediate drive chain sprocket teeth.
  12.  
  13. Install the left intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets into the left secondary camshaft drive chain.
  14.  
  15. Install the left intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts. The camshaft sprocket notch marked "LI" which indicates left intake, engages the intake camshaft pin and the camshaft sprocket notch marked "LE" which indicates left exhaust, engages the exhaust camshaft pin.

  17. If necessary, use an open wrench on the hex cast near the front of each camshaft to help align the sprocket notch to the camshaft pin.
  18.  
  19. Loosely install the left intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket bolts.
  20.  
  21. Ensure the perpendicular alignment of the left intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket notches and camshaft pins to the cylinder head.
  22.  
  23. Install tool J 44212 to the left cylinder head camshafts.
  24.  
  25. Install the upper left secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt. Tighten BOTH the upper and lower left secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Collapse the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Rotate the ratchet release lever counterclockwise and hold.

    3. Collapse the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner shoe and hold.
    4.

  31. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts. Tighten the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  33. Remove pin from left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner lever.

Secondary Camshaft Drive Chain Installation-Right Side
  1. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  2.  
  3. Loosely install the lower right secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt.
  4.  
  5. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  6.  
  7. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt. Tighten the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain by sliding the chain down through the right cylinder head and placing the chain on the end of the camshafts.
  10.  
  11. Route the right secondary camshaft drive chain around the outer row of the intermediate drive chain sprocket teeth.
  12.  
  13. Install the right intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets into the right secondary camshaft drive chain.
  14.  
  15. Install the right intake and exhaust camshafts onto the camshafts. The camshaft sprocket notch marked "RI" which indicates right intake, engages the intake camshaft pin and the camshaft sprocket notch marked "RE" which indicates right exhaust, engages the exhaust camshaft pin.

  17. If necessary, use an open wrench on the hex cast near the front of each camshaft to help align the sprocket notch to the camshaft pin.
  18.  
  19. Loosely install the right intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket bolts.
  20.  
  21. Ensure the perpendicular alignment of the right intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket notches and camshaft pins to the cylinder head.
  22.  
  23. Install tool J 44212 to the right cylinder head camshafts.
  24.  
  25. Install the upper right secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt. Tighten BOTH the upper and lower right secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Collapse the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Rotate the ratchet release lever counter-clockwise and hold.
    2.  
    3. Collapse the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner shoe and hold.
    4.  
    5. Release the ratchet lever and slowly release the pressure on the shoe.
    6.  
    7. When the ratchet lever moves to the first detent a click should be heard and felt.
    8.  
    9. Insert a pin through the hole in the release lever in order to lock the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner shoe in the collapsed position.
      NOTE
      Ensure the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner release lever is facing out.

  29. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  30.  
  31. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts. Tighten the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  33. Remove pin from right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner lever.
  34.  
  35. Ensure the correct alignment of all secondary timing components.
  36.  
  37. Ensure the correct alignment of all primary timing components.
  38.  
  39. Tighten ALL camshaft sprocket bolts. Use the hex cast into each camshaft to prevent engine rotation and provide leverage. Tighten ALL camshaft sprocket bolts to 90 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the chain guide access plugs located in the cylinder heads. Ensure the O-ring seal is on each access plug. Tighten the chain guide access plugs to 4.5 Nm (39 inch lbs.).
  42.  
  43. Install a NEW O-ring on the camshaft position sensor.
  44.  
  45. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil.
  46.  
  47. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  48.  
  49. Install the camshaft position sensor bolt. Tighten the camshaft position sensor bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

Secondary Camshaft Drive Chain Removal-Left Side
  1. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner allowing it to expand as you remove it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper left secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts from the camshafts. Use an open wrench on the hex cast near the front of each camshaft to prevent engine rotation when loosening the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lift the secondary camshaft drive chain from the camshaft sprocket teeth and slide the camshaft sprockets off of the camshafts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left secondary drive chain.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower left secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain guide.

To install:

Secondary Camshaft Drive Chain Removal-Right Side
  1. Remove the camshaft position sensor bolt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft position sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the camshaft position sensor O-ring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the chain guide access plugs located in the cylinder heads. Ensure the O-ring seal is on each access plug.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right secondary drive chain tensioner bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner allowing it to expand as you remove it.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper right secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts from the camshafts. Use an open wrench on the hex cast near the front of each camshaft to prevent engine rotation when loosening the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  16.  
  17. Lift the secondary camshaft drive chain from the camshaft sprocket teeth and slide the camshaft sprockets off of the camshafts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain.
  20.  
  21. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower right secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolt.
  26.  
  27. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
