Fuel Pressure Regulator

Removal & Installation



3.8L Engines
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  2.  
  3. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator retaining ring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator.
  6.  
  7. Remove the snap ring.
  8.  
  9. Using a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel, lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel pressure regulator housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the regulator O-ring small.
  12.  
  13. Remove the regulator filter screen.
  14.  
  15. Remove the regulator O-ring large.
  16.  
  17. Remove the regulator O-ring back up.
  18.  
  19. Cover the fuel pressure regulator housing to prevent contamination from entering the fuel system.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the new O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator, if a new fuel pressure regulator is not being installed. Lubricate the O-rings lightly with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the regulator back up O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Install the regulator O-ring large.
  6.  
  7. Install the regulator filter screen.
  8.  
  9. Install the regulator O-ring small.
  10.  
  11. Install the fuel pressure regulator in the fuel pressure regulator housing.
  12.  
  13. Install the snap ring.
  14.  
  15. Perform the following procedure in order to inspect for leaks:
    1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    4.  
    5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    6.  
    7. Inspect for fuel leaks.
    8.

  17. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  18.  

4.6L Engine
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  2.  
  3. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer clip.
  8.  
  9. Lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the regulator from the fuel rail. Use a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the regulator seal lower O-ring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the regulator assembly filter.
  14.  
  15. Remove the regulator seal upper O-ring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the regulator seal back-up ring.
  18.  
  19. Cover the fuel pressure regulator housing in order to prevent contaminates from entering the fuel system.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install new O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator if a new regulator is not being installed. Lubricate the O-rings lightly with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the back-up ring.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper O-ring.
  6.  
  7. Install the filter.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower O-ring.
  10.  
  11. Install the fuel pressure regulator retainer clip.
  12.  
  13. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Perform the following procedure in order to inspect for leaks:
    1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    4.  
    5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    6.  
    7. Inspect for fuel leaks.
    8.

  19. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
