Removal & Installation



3.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Flexplate inspection cover
     
    Splash shield, if equipped
     
    Electrical connectors
     
    Transmission cooler line clip from the transmission, if necessary
     
    Starter motor wiring
     
    Starter motor bolts
     
    Starter

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter and torque the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
     
    Wiring and torque the -B- terminal nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and the -S- terminal nut to 22 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
     
    Flexplate inspection cover and torque the bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
     
    Splash shield
     
    Negative battery cable

4.6L Engines
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the BAT cable from the starter.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wire from the S terminal on the starter.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 starter motor mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter motor.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Connect the starter motor S terminal wire. Tighten the starter solenoid S terminal nut to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.).
  2.  
  3. Connect the starter motor BAT terminal wire. Tighten the battery cable to starter terminal nut to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the starter motor.
  6.  
  7. Install the starter motor mounting bolts. Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
  8.  
  9. Install the intake manifold.
  10.  
  11. Connect the battery negative cable.
  12.
