Removal & Installation




WARNING
Mark running direction of belt rotation before removing belt. Reinstalling a used belt in the opposite running direction may result in reduced service life.

2.0L And 2.4L Engines
A/C & Alternator Belt
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Insert a 3 / 8 - drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tensioner pivot bracket.
    WARNING
    Do not use excessive force to over compress belt tensioner. This may result in damage to the belt tensioner.

  6.  
  7. Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be removed from pulleys.
  8.  
  9. Remove the belt.
  10.  
  11. Gently release tensioner.
  12.  

To install:


NOTE
When installing drive belt onto pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley.

  1. Install the belt over all pulleys except for the air conditioning compressor pulley.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 3 / 8 - drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tensioner pivot bracket.
  4.  
  5. Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be installed onto air conditioning compressor pulley.
  6.  
  7. Install the belt over air conditioning compressor pulley.
  8.  
  9. Release spring tension onto belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the breaker bar from belt tensioner pivot bracket.
  12.  
  13. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  14.  
  15. Lower vehicle.

Power Steering Belt
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt.
  6.  
  7. Loosen pivot bolt and locking bolt/nut.
  8.  
  9. Release tension on belt by moving pump assembly inward towards engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove the belt.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the power steering pump belt on pulleys.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 1 / 2 - drive breaker bar into the square opening on the power steering pump bracket.
  4.  
  5. Hold clockwise pressure on power steering pump bracket and tighten adjusting bolt/nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten pivot bolt.
  8.  
  9. Install the air conditioning compressor/generator belt.
  10.  
  11. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  12.  
  13. Lower vehicle.
  14.  

2.0L Engine
A/C Compressor Drive Belt
  1. Loosen the tensioner pulley fixing nut.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the adjusting bolt to release the belt tension.
  4.  
  5. Remove belt.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the new belt around the pulleys.
  2.  
  3. With the tensioner pulley fixing nut temporarily tightened to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), set the belt tension or deflection amount to the standard value using the adjusting bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the tension pulley fixing nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

Alternator And Power Steering Drive Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the nut of the alternator pivot bolt.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the lock bolt on the alternator mounting ear.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the adjusting bolt to release the belt tension
  8.  
  9. Remove belt
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the new belt over the pulleys.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the tension adjustment screw until the belt reaches appropriate tension.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the lock bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut of the alternator pivot bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 44 inch lbs. (4.9 Nm).

2.4L Engine
Alternator Drive Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the nut of the alternator pivot bolt.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the lock bolt.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the adjusting bolt so that there is enough slack in the belt to remove it.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the new belt around the crankshaft, alternator and water pump pulleys.
  2.  
  3. If using a new belt, tighten the adjusting bolt to set the belt tension to 176-221 lbs. (785-981 N), or to 0.17-0.21 inches (4.4-5.4mm) of deflection using the tension inspection techniques above.
    NOTE
    This is a higher tension than when inspecting a used belt. The new belt will stretch and relax to the inspection figures within a few hundred miles.

  4.  
  5. Tighten the lock bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut of the alternator pivot bolt to 33 ft. lb. (44 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 44 inch lb. (4.9 Nm).

Power Steering Pump And A/C Compressor Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the tension pulley fixing nut "A" behind the tension pulley.
  4.  
  5. Loosen adjusting bolt B until there is enough slack in the belt to remove it.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the new belt around the crankshaft, A/C compressor (if so equipped) and power steering pump pulleys.
  2.  
  3. Tighten adjusting bolt B until the belt has reached 137-181 lbs. (608-804 N) of tension or 0.33-0.41 inches (8.4-10.4mm) of deflection using inspection methods above.
    NOTE
    This is a higher tension than when inspecting a used belt. The new belt will stretch and relax to the inspection figures within a few hundred miles.

  4.  
  5. Tighten the fixing nut A to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).

2.5L Engine
A/C & Alternator Belt
  1. Remove the power steering pump drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Loosen idler pulley locking bolt.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the adjusting screw to decrease the idler pulley tension.
  6.  
  7. Remove the belt.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the drive belt on pulleys
  2.  
  3. Tighten the adjusting screw until belt is tensioned to specifications. Refer to Adjustment section for specifications.
  4.  
  5. Tighten idler pulley locking bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
  6.  
  7. Recheck belt for proper tension and adjust as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering pump drive belt.

A/C Compressor Drive Belt
  1. Loosen the tensioner pulley fixing nut.
  2.  
  3. With the tensioner pulley fixing nut temporarily tightened to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), set the belt tension or deflection amount to the standard value using the adjusting bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the tension pulley fixing nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

Alternator And Power Steering Drive Belt
  1. Loosen alternator top mounting ear bolt
  2.  
  3. Loosen pivot bolt, but do not remove.
  4.  
  5. Loosen adjusting bolt on idler to allow removal of the alternator drive belt.

Power Steering Pump
  1. From the top of the vehicle loosen pivot bolt (1).
  2.  
  3. Hoist vehicle and remove splash shield.
  4.  
  5. From under the vehicle loosen the locking bolts (3) and (5).
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the belt.
  2.  
  3. Adjust belt tension with 1 / 2 inch drive breaker bar installed in adjusting bracket (2).
  4.  
  5. Use belt tension gauge and refer to Adjustment section for tension specification.
  6.  
  7. Tighten locking bolt (5) to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
  8.  
  9. Tighten locking bolt (3) and the pivot bolt (1) to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)

2.7L Engine
A/C & Alternator Belt
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Loosen tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt.
  6.  
  7. Rotate tensioner clockwise to allow enough slack to remove belt
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt on pulleys, tensioner in slack position, slip belt over idler last.
  2.  
  3. Adjust drive belt tension.
  4.  
  5. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  6.  
  7. Lower vehicle.

Power Steering Belt
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt.
  6.  
  7. Loosen belt adjusting bolt. It is not necessary to loosen the pivot bolt on the power steering pump. There is a bushing incorporated into the power steering pump/bracket that allows it to pivot.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering belt.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the power steering belt on pulleys.
  2.  
  3. Adjust drive belt tension.
  4.  
  5. Install the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt.
  6.  
  7. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Lower vehicle.
  10.  

3.0L Engines
Alternator And A/C Compressor Drive Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the tensioner pulley fixing nut.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the tensioner adjusting bolt until there is enough slack in the belt to remove it.
  6.  
  7. Remove the belt
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the new belt over the crankshaft, A/C compressor, idler, tensioner and alternator pulleys.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the tensioner adjusting bolt until the belt reaches 176-221 lbs. (785-981 N) of tension or 0.24-0.30 inches (6.2-7.6mm) of deflection
    NOTE
    This is a higher tension than when inspecting a used belt. The new belt will stretch and relax to the inspection figures within a few hundred miles.

  4.  
  5. Tighten the tension pulley fixing nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
