  2.
  3. Install the sleeve into the lower isolator bushing.
  4.
  5. Install the bushing and sleeve into the bottom of the upper mounting bracket.
  6.
  7. Install the upper isolator bushing into the center of the upper mounting bracket.
  8.
  9. Install the lower end of the spring in the compressor tool supported by the hooks.
  10.
  11. Install the upper mounting bracket on top of the coil spring matching the spring to the isolator on the upper mounting bracket.
  12.
  13. Install the control arm ball joint directly below the front upper hook.
  14.
  15. Compress the spring.
  16.
  17. Install the lower spring isolator on the spring seat.
  18.
  19. Install the jounce bumper with the pointed end downward.
  20.
  21. Install the collar with the undercut side facing down.
  22.
  23. Install the dust shield and cup
  24.
  25. Install the lower bushing retainer washer
  26.
  27. Install the strut/shock assembly through the coil spring.
  28.
  29. When properly aligned, install the upper mounting nut and torque the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  30.
  31. Slowly release the tension from the compressor tool.
  32.
  33. Install the strut/shock assembly in the vehicle.
  34.

2.0L & 2.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Place the shock absorber assembly in Compressor Tools MB991237 and MB991238 spring compressor assembly or equivalent. Tighten the compressor and compress the spring slowly. Make certain the compressor is properly engaged before tightening.
  4.
  5. After tension has been removed from the shock absorber assembly and shock absorber plate, remove the piston rod nut and washer from the top of the shock absorber assembly.
  6.
  7. If the spring is to be replaced, slowly release the tension on the spring compressor. Allow the spring to expand fully. If only the shock absorber is being replaced, the spring may remain in the compressor assembly.
  8.
  9. By hand, remove the upper shock absorber bearing, washer, mount and shock absorber shield. Remove the upper insulator ring, the spring, the bumper and lower insulator from the spring. Take notice to each components location for proper reassembly.

To install:

  1. Install the lower insulator, the shock absorber bumper and the uncompressed spring. Install the upper spring insulator, shock absorber shield, mount and washer.
  2.
  3. Install or align the spring compressor. Make certain the spring is correctly positioned relative to the upper and lower insulator rings. Smoothly compress the spring.
  4.
  5. Install the washer and piston rod nut. Torque the nut on the front strut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) or 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) on the rear strut. Install the dust cap.
  6.
  7. Carefully release the spring compressor, watching the spring position as it seats. When the spring is properly seated, release/remove the compressor tools.
  8.
  9. Reinstall the shock absorber assembly.
  10.

2.4L & 3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove the strut/shock assembly and place it in Special Tools MB991237 and MB991238 or a suitable spring compressor.
  4.
  5. Install Special Tool MB991176 or suitable means to secure the strut to remove the jam nut and dust cover.
    WARNING
Do not use an impact wrench to loosen the jam nut. The strut assembly make shake out of the spring compressor and cause personal injury.

  6.
  7. Remove the strut insulator.
  8.
  9. Remove the upper spring seat and pad.
  10.
  11. Remove the bump stop and dust cover.
  12.
  13. Remove the coil spring.
