Print

NOTE
Before servicing the vehicle, also refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

Removal & Installation

WARNING
The fuel system is under a constant pressure, even with engine off. before servicing the fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator, the fuel system pressure must be released.

2.0L & 2.4L Engines

CAUTION
Fuel system pressure must be relieved before servicing any fuel system component.

The fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel pump module. Remove the fuel pump module from the fuel tank to access the fuel pressure regulator. Refer to the fuel pump module removal in this section.

  1. Spread tangs on pressure regulator retainer
  2.
  3. Pry fuel pressure regulator out of housing.
    NOTE
Ensure both upper and lower O-rings were removed with regulator.

  4.

To install:

  1. Lightly lubricate the O-rings with clean engine oil and place them into opening in pump module.
  2.
  3. Push regulator into opening in pump module.
  4.
  5. Fold tangs on regulator retainer over tabs on housing.
  6.

2.5L & 3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
    NOTE
The fuel pressure regulator is located on the fuel rail on the front bank of the engine.

  6.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

Fuel return line from fuel pressure regulator

Vacuum line from fuel pressure regulator

Fuel pressure regulator from fuel rail and discard the O-ring

  8.

To install:

  1. Install a new O-ring onto the fuel pressure regulator
  2.
  3. Lubricate the O-rings with clean engine oil and install it into the fuel rail with a left-right twisting motion, making sure it seats smoothly and torque the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
    WARNING
Do not allow engine oil to get into the fuel rail.

  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Vacuum line

    Fuel return line

  6.
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  8.

Models With External Fuel Pressure Regulator

Refer to Relieving Fuel System Pressure in this section. The fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator is located on the top of fuel pump module. Fuel pump module removal is not necessary.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Remove the fuel tank.
  4.
  5. Disconnect fuel supply line at the Filter/Regulator nipple.
  6.
  7. Depress locking spring tab on side of Fuel/Regulator and rotate 90° counter-clockwise and pull out.
    NOTE
Make sure that the upper and lower O-rings are on the Filter/Regulator assembly.
