2.0L & 2.4L Engines




CAUTION
Power steering fluid, engine components and exhaust system may be extremely hot if engine has been running. Do not start engine with any loose or disconnected hoses, or allow hoses to touch hot exhaust manifold or catalyst.

  1. Remove the battery cable from negative (-) post on battery and isolate cable.
  2.  
  3. Siphon as much power steering fluid as possible out of the remote power steering fluid reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clamp, then fluid supply hose from fitting on pump. Install the a cap on fitting.
  6.  
  7. Raise vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering fluid pressure hose from pressure fitting on power steering pump. Let power steering fluid drain out of system. After power steering fluid has drained out of pump and hose, install the a cap on the power steering pressure hose and a plug in the power steering pump pressure fitting.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt at adjustment slot in pump front mounting bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the nut at adjustment slot in cast aluminum mounting bracket at rear of pump.
  16.  
  17. Loosen pump upper pivot bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pump drive belt.
  20.  
  21. Remove the pump upper pivot bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering pump and its front mounting bracket as an assembly from the engine through opening above right halfshaft and below right frame rail.

  1. Install the power steering pump and front mounting bracket as an assembly back in vehicle, using reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. Install the power steering pump and front bracket on the cast aluminum engine bracket. Loosely Install the upper mounting pivot bolt.
  4.  
  5. Loosely Install the pump mounting bolt through the adjustment slot in the front mounting bracket.
  6.  
  7. Loosely Install the nut mounting the power steering pump to its rear mounting bracket adjustment slot.
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering pump drive belt on power steering pump pulley. Install the a 1 / 2 inch breaker bar in the square adjusting hole in the front power steering pump mounting bracket and adjust belt. For procedures on adjusting the accessory drive belts refer to the section Engine Mechanical and subsection on adjusting belts.

  11. When correct drive belt tension is obtained, first tighten the two adjusting slot fasteners (one bolt, one nut) to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Next, tighten the power steering pump mounting bracket top pivot bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Using a lint free towel, wipe clean all open power steering hose ends, and power steering pump fittings.
  16.  
  17. Install the a new O-ring on end of power steering pressure hose fitting. Lubricate all O-rings using fresh clean power steering fluid.
  18.  
  19. Install the power steering pressure hose on the power steering pump pressure fitting. Tighten the tube nut to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive splash shield.
  22.  
  23. Lower vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Install the power steering fluid supply hose on power steering pump supply fitting. Install the hose clamp. Be sure hose clamp is installed on hose past upset bead on suction fitting.
  26.  
  27. Connect negative (-) cable back on negative post of battery.
  28.  
  29. Fill power steering reservoir to correct fluid level. Refer to the bleeding procedure at the end of this section.
  30.  
  31. Check for leaks at all hose connections and power steering pump.
  32.  

2.0L & 2.5L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt
     
    Pressure switch connector
     
    Return hose
     
    High pressure hose
     
    Seal washer
     
    Pivot bolts
     
    Power steering pump from vehicle

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump and temporarily tighten the 2 pivot bolts and 1 adjuster slide bolt
     
    High pressure hose with new seal washers and torque the bolt to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm)
     
    Return hose
     
    Pressure switch connector
     
    Drive belt
     
    Tension drive belt and torque adjuster slide bolt and 2 pivot bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Refill and bleed the power steering fluid

2.4L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt
     
    Pressure switch connector
     
    Return hose
     
    High pressure hose
     
    Seal washer
     
    Pivot bolts
     
    Power steering pump from vehicle

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump and torque the 3 mounting bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
     
    High pressure hose with new seal washers and torque the bolt to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm)
     
    Return hose
     
    Pressure switch connector
     
    Drive belt
     
    Refill and bleed the power steering fluid

2.5L Engines




CAUTION

  1. Remove the battery cable from (-) negative post on battery and isolate cable.
  2.  
  3. Siphon as much power steering fluid as possible out of the remote power steering fluid reservoir.

  5. Remove the power steering fluid supply hose from the power steering fluid reservoir
    1. Fluid supply hose will be removed with the power steering pump.

  7. Raise vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front tire from vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the accessory drive splash shield.

  15. Loosen bolt at adjusting slot in accessory drive mounting bracket attaching back of power steering pump to the bracket.

  19. Loosen bolt at adjustment slot attaching the power steering pump front mounting bracket to cast aluminum accessory drive bracket on engine.
  20.  
  21. Move the power steering pump toward the engine as far as possible.
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering fluid pressure hose from pressure fitting on power steering pump.
    1. Be careful not to loose the copper sealing washers on both sides of the hose banjo fitting once the flow bolt is removed.
    2.  
    3. Let the remaining power steering fluid drain out of the power steering fluid supply hose, power steering pump and power steering fluid pressure hose.
    4.  
    5. After power steering fluid has drained out of pump and hose, install the a cap on the power steering pressure hose and a plug in the power steering pump pressure fitting.

  25. Remove the power steering pump drive belt from power steering pump pulley.
  26.  
  27. Remove the bolt at adjusting slot in accessory drive mounting bracket attaching back of power steering pump to the bracket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the bolt at adjustment slot, attaching the power steering pump front mounting bracket to cast aluminum accessory drive bracket on engine. Then remove bolt at top of power steering front mounting bracket, attaching it to the accessory drive bracket.
  30.  
  31. Remove the power steering pump, supply hose and its front mounting bracket as an assembly from the engine mounted power steering pump mounting bracket. Place the power steering pump on top of the antilock brakes Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU).
    NOTE
    The power steering pump can not be removed from the vehicle without first removing the power steering pump mounting bracket from the engine.

  33. Remove the 4 bolts mounting the power steering pump mounting bracket to the engine.
  34.  
  35. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket from the engine. Position the power steering pump mounting bracket where it will not be in the way when removing power steering pump from the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove the power steering pump, fluid supply hose and front mounting bracket as an assembly from the engine and vehicle. Pump, fluid supply hose and mounting bracket is removable by bringing it out through area between rear of engine, frame drive axle and front suspension crossmember
  38.  
  39. Transfer required parts from removed power steering pump to replacement power steering pump.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Install the power steering pump, mounting bracket and fluid supply hose as an assembly back in vehicle, using the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure power steering fluid supply hose is correctly routed up to the power steering fluid reservoir when installing power steering pump.
  2.  
  3. Place the power steering pump on top of the antilock brakes HCU.
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pump mounting bracket on the rear of the engine. Tighten the mounting bracket attaching bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the power steering pump and front bracket on engine mounted power steering pump mounting bracket. Loosely Install the bolt at adjusting slot and top of power steering pump front bracket mounting pump bracket to accessory drive bracket.
  8.  
  9. Loosely Install the bolt mounting power steering pump to its rear mounting bracket
  10.  
  11. Using a lint free towel, wipe clean all open power steering hose ends, and power steering pump fittings.
  12.  
  13. Install the a new O-ring on end of power steering pressure hose fitting. Lubricate all O-rings using fresh clean power steering fluid.
  14.  
  15. Install the power steering pressure hose on the power steering pump pressure fitting. Loosely Install the tube nut into pressure fitting on power steering pump
  16.  
  17. Pressure hose must be installed between the front bracket of the power steering pump and power steering pump pulley.
  18.  
  19. Install the power steering pump drive belt on power steering pump pulley.
  20.  
  21. Install the a 1 / 2 inch breaker bar in the square adjusting hole in the front power steering pump mounting bracket, then rotate pump to obtain the correct drive belt tension.
    1. For procedures on adjusting the accessory drive belts refer to the section Engine Mechanical and subsection on adjusting belts.
    2.  
    3. When correct drive belt tension is obtained, first tighten the bottom 2 adjusting slot bolts at the power steering pump cast mounting bracket to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm), then tighten the power steering pump mounting bracket top pivot bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
    4.

  23. Position power steering pressure hose, so hose is not contacting the power steering pump pulley or the drive belt. Tighten the tube nut to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).

  25. Install the heat shield on HCU.
  26.  
  27. Install the accessory drive splash shield .
  28.  
  29. Install the wheel and tire.
    1. Tighten the wheel lug nuts in proper sequence until all lug nuts are torqued to half specification.
    2.  
    3. Then repeat tightening sequence to full specified torque.
    4.

  31. Lower vehicle.

  33. Install the power steering fluid supply hose on power steering fluid reservoir fitting. Install the hose clamp on hose. Be sure hose clamp is installed on hose past upset bead on power steering fluid reservoir
    WARNING
    Do not use automatic transmission fluid in power steering system. Only use MOPAR®, Power Steering Fluid, or equivalent.

  35. Fill power steering reservoir to correct fluid level.
  36.  
  37. Connect negative cable back on negative post of battery.
  38.  
  39. Fill power steering reservoir to correct fluid level. Refer to the bleeding procedure at the end of this section.

  41. Check for leaks at all hose connections and power steering pump.
  42.  

2.7L Engine




CAUTION
Power steering fluid, engine components and exhaust system may be extremely hot if engine has been running. Do not start engine with any loose or disconnected hoses, or allow hoses to touch hot exhaust manifold or catalyst.

  1. Remove the battery cable from (-) negative post on battery and isolate cable.
  2.  
  3. Siphon as much power steering fluid as possible out of power steering fluid reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Remove the power steering fluid supply hose from power steering pump supply fitting.
  6.  
  7. Raise vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering fluid pressure hose from fitting on power steering pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oxygen sensor harness and clip from rear of pump.
  14.  
  15. Completely remove bolt at slot in stamped pump adjuster bracket and remove power steering drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Pivot pump out past full-adjust position. This will allow access to two pump bracket-to-engine mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the three bolts fastening cast power steering pump bracket to the engine.
  20.  
  21. Remove the power steering pump, pulley and brackets as an assembly from the engine. Remove pump through opening between frame rail and right halfshaft.
  22.  
  23. Remove the stamped adjuster bracket mounting bolts. Remove bracket from pump.
  24.  
  25. Remove the two pivot bolts. Remove cast mounting bracket from pump.

To install:

  1. If previously removed, install the cast mounting bracket on pump using two pivot bolts.
    1. Tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

  3. If previously removed, install the stamped adjuster bracket on pump using its mounting bolts.
    1. Tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    2.

  5. Install the power steering pump, pulley and brackets as an assembly back in vehicle, using reverse of removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Install the three bolts fastening cast pump mounting bracket to engine.
    1. Tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Loosely Install the bolt through stamped adjuster bracket slot and into cast bracket .
  10.  
  11. Using a lint free towel, wipe clean all open power steering hose ends, and power steering pump fittings.
  12.  
  13. Install the clip attaching oxygen sensor harness to rear of pump.
  14.  
  15. Install the power steering pump drive belt on pump pulley.
  16.  
  17. Install the a 1 / 2 inch breaker bar in square adjusting hole in front power steering pump mounting bracket and adjust belt. For procedures on adjusting the accessory drive belts refer to the section Engine Mechanical and subsection on adjusting belts.
  18.  
  19. When correct drive belt tension is obtained, tighten adjusting slot bolt to: 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the a new O-ring on end of power steering pressure hose fitting. Lubricate all O-rings using fresh clean power steering fluid.
  22.  
  23. Install the power steering pressure hose on pump pressure fitting .
    1. Tighten tube nut to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).

  25. Install the accessory drive splash shield.

  27. Lower vehicle.

  29. Install the power steering fluid supply hose on pump supply fitting . Install the hose clamp on hose.
    1. Be sure hose clamp is installed on hose past upset bead on power steering fluid reservoir.

  31. Connect battery cable back on negative (-) post of battery.

  33. Fill power steering reservoir to correct fluid level. Refer to the bleeding procedure at the end of this section.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.

  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt
     
    Pressure switch connector
     
    Return hose
     
    High pressure hose
     
    Seal washer
     
    Pivot bolts
     
    Power steering pump from vehicle

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump and temporarily tighten the lower pivot bolt and upper slide nut
     
    High pressure hose with new seal washers and torque the bolt to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm)
     
    Return hose
     
    Pressure switch connector
     
    Drive belt
     
    Torque upper slide nut to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm) and lower pivot bolt to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm)
     
    Refill and bleed the power steering fluid
