Camshaft (Cylinder Head) Cover

Removal & Installation



3.4L (VIN X) Engine
Left Side (Front)

  1. Remove the oil/air breather hose from the cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plug wires from the plugs. Please see Section 1.
  4.  
  5. Remove the camshaft carrier cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove the gasket and the O-ring seals from the cover.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well.
  2.  
  3. Install new O-rings and gasket to the camshaft carrier cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the cover and the retaining bolts. Torque to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  8.  

Right Side (Rear)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold using the procedure in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right timing belt cover using the procedure in this section.
  6.  
  7. Tag and disconnect the right spark plug wires.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the oil/air separator hose at the camshaft carrier cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft carrier cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine.
  12.  
  13. Remove the gasket and the O-ring seals from the cover.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well.
  2.  
  3. Install new O-rings and gasket to the camshaft carrier cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the cover and the retaining bolts. Torque to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  8.  

3.5L Engine
Left Side (Front)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the acoustic/cosmetic engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dipstick tube bolt and adjust the tube for access.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the PCV valve and feed tube from the front cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil assembly from the cover.
  10.

  1. Remove the engine wiring harness channel bolt from the cover and reposition the wiring harness and the channel. Remove and set aside the wiring harness with retainers from the cover.

  3. Remove the camshaft cover retaining bolts and lift the cover from the cylinder head evenly.
  4.  


NOTE
Work carefully. The camshaft cover seals (perimeter seal and the spark plug seals) should be reused unless they are damaged or if the perimeter seal is pulled from its groove during removal.

  1. Rotate and remove the spark plug boots. Replace if necessary. GM recommends only tool J 43094 be used to handle the spark plug boots. Please see Section 1 for more information.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well. Clean the camshaft carrier and the cover sealing surfaces with a clean cloth. Inspect the perimeter and spark plug seals for damage. Make sure the perimeter seal is not pulled from its groove. Replace any damaged or worn seals.
  2.  
  3. Place the camshaft carrier cover on the camshaft carrier and install the bolts. Torque carefully to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plugs and ignition coil assembly. Please see Section 1.
  6.  
  7. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  8.  

Right Side (Rear)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the acoustic/cosmetic engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the PCV valve and feed tube from the rear cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the surge tank inlet hose from the surge tank and plug the hose. Remove the surge tank nuts and reposition the surge tank. Remove the surge tank inlet hose bracket bolt, and reposition the bracket.
  8.  
  9. Release the clips at the power steering lines. Reposition the lines as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine wiring harness channel bolt from the rear camshaft cover, remove the channel and set aside. Remove the harness retainers from the cover.
  12.  
  13. Detach the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear bank ignition coil assembly from the camshaft cover. Please see Section 1.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft cover bolts and lift the cover evenly from the camshaft carrier.
  18.  


NOTE
