Removal & Installation

Glass

NOTE
GM specifies that before installing a door trim panel to the door, the old trim panel retainers MUST be discarded and replaced with NEW retainers. If new retainers are not used, the trim panel will not be properly secured to the door.

Front Door
  1. If equipped with a Theftlock® radio, disable this anti-theft feature. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the door trim panel using the procedures found in this section.
  4.
  5. Remove the inner sealing strip.
  6.
  7. Remove the window-to-regulator bolts
  8.
  9. Remove the window from the door.
  10.

To install:

  1. Position the window between the inner and outer panels. Point the lower front corner of the window down and pass through the belt opening, aligning the edges with the door window channel. Turn the window to the horizontal position and align the holes in the window with holes in the regulator sash.
  2.
  3. Install replacement pull rivets, as required.
  4.
  5. Inspect both sealing lips on the outer belt sealing strip to make sure they are not rolled over and pointing downwards. If this condition is present, the window will not raise properly.
  6.
  7. Install the window-to-regulator bolts, forward bolt first. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then install the rearward window-to-regulator bolt second and also torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the inner sealing strip.
  10.
  11. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  12.
  13. Install the door trim panel.
  14.

Rear Door
  1. Remove the trim panel using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the power window and door lock switch plate assembly from the trim panel. Use a protective layer of tape on a flat-bladed tool. Insert the tool at the rear of the switch plate and press forward to release the switch plate retainers.
    2.
    3. Detach the electrical connector.
    4.
    5. Locate the trim panel plugs that cover the screw heads. Carefully pry off the plugs and remove the trim panel screws.
    6.
    7. Using a trim panel tool, carefully work around the panel, disengaging the fasteners.
    8.
    9. Remove the trim panel by pulling straight off the door.
    10.

  2.
  3. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  4.
  5. Remove the energy absorber (foam pad).
  6.
  7. Remove the inner sealing strip by lifting off the pinch weld flange
  8.
  9. Remove the retaining screw from the outer sealing strip and using fingers, pull off the door flange.
  10.
  11. Remove the door frame molding. This is the vertical panel at the front of the door frame. The window should be in the full down position. It may be necessary to pull the door window weather-strip part way from the molding. On Pontiacs, there should be screws retaining the door frame molding. On Buicks, the door frame molding should slide upwards for removal.
  12.
  13. Remove the window mounting bolts and remove the rear door window from the rear door.
  14.

To install:

  1. Install the rear door window between the inner and outer panels.
  2.
  3. Point the lower front corner of the rear door window down and pass through the belt opening.
  4.
  5. Align the edges with the rear door window weather-strips.
  6.
  7. Turn the window to a horizontal position and align the holes in the window with the holes in the window regulator.
  8.
  9. Inspect both sealing lips on the outer belt sealing strip to make sure they are not rolled over and pointing downwards. If this condition is present, the window will not raise properly.
  10.
  11. Install the window-to-regulator bolts, forward bolt first. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then install the rearward window-to-regulator bolt second and also torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.
  13. Install the inner and outer sealing strips and the energy absorber (foam pad).
  14.
  15. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  16.
  17. Install the rear door trim panel. New panel retainers are recommended. Align the trim panel retainers to the door panel holes and press straight in. Press firmly to properly seat the fasteners into the holes in the door panel. Install the screws and cover the heads with the trim panel plugs. Snap the power window switch back into place.
  18.

Motor & Regulator

NOTE
Some window regulators are retained at least in part, by heavy-duty pull rivets. To remove these rivets, the center mandrel must be pushed through with a small punch, and the rivet(s) drilled out with a 3 / 16 inch drill bit. The factory recommended repair requires the use of the same quality of heavy-duty pull rivet.

  2.
  3. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  4.
  5. Remove the window-to regulator bolts by raising the window far enough to gain access to the bolts through the door metal.
  6.
  7. Raise and securely tape the window in the full up position.
  8.
  9. Detach the electrical connector.
  10.
  11. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the regulator from the door.
  12.
  13. If the motor is to be replaced, simply unbolt the motor from the regulator.
