Transaxle Removal & Installation

Special tools required:



Engine hanger adapter VSB02C000015
 
CR-V engine hanger adapter VSB02C000032
 
Front subframe adapter VSB02C000016
 
Engine support hanger AAR-T-1256
 


WARNING
Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces. The special tool engine hanger must be used with the side engine mount installed.

  1. Remove the front bulkhead cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and remove the battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air intake duct.
  8.  
  9. Remove the battery base.
  10.  
  11. Raise the vehicle and make sure it is securely supported.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front wheels.
  14.  
  15. Remove the splash shield.
  16.  
  17. Remove the drain plug and drain the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).
  18.  
  19. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.
  20.  
  21. Fix the hood in the vertical position.
  22.  
  23. Remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket and remove the air cleaner housing bracket.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector, the 2nd clutch transaxle fluid pressure switch connector, and remove the harness clamps from the clamp brackets.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the transaxle range switch connector and remove the connector from its bracket.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector and remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the 3rd clutch transaxle fluid pressure switch connector and remove the harness clamp from its bracket.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector, the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector, and the shift solenoid harness connector, then remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses from the ATF lines. Turn the end of the ATF cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hoses and lines.
  36.  
  37. Attach the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.

  39. Remove both lids (A) for the front strut flange nuts from the cowl cover. Position the engine hanger adapters (VSB02C000032) over the strut flange nuts.

  41. Carefully position the engine support hanger (AAR-T-1256) on the vehicle, and attach the hook (A) to the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015). Tighten the wing nut (B) by hand, and lift and support the engine.

  43. Insert a 6mm Allen wrench (A) in the top of the ball joint pin (B), and remove the nut (C), then separate the stabilizer link (D) from the stabilizer (E). Repeat this for the other stabilizer link.

  45. Remove the nuts (F) and the bolt (G) securing the lower arm (H) and the ball joint (I), and separate the lower arms from the ball joints.

  47. Disconnect the A/F sensor connector and the secondary heated oxygen sensor connector.
  48.  
  49. Remove the sensor harnesses from the harness clamps.
  50.  
  51. Remove the 3-way catalytic converter.
  52.  
  53. For 4WD models, make a reference mark across the propeller shaft and the transfer companion flange. Separate the propeller shaft from the transfer companion flange.
  54.  
  55. Remove the steering gearbox bracket mounting bolts.
  56.  
  57. Remove the steering gearbox bracket mounting bolts.
  58.  
  59. Remove the bolt securing the power steering fluid line clamp.
  60.  
  61. Remove the power steering fluid line from the line clamps.
  62.  
  63. Remove the bolt securing the ATF filter on the front subframe.
  64.  
  65. Remove the lower torque rod bolts.
  66.  
  67. Remove the shift cable cover (A).
  68.  
  69. Remove the spring clip (B) and the control pin (C), and separate the shift cable end (D) from the control lever (E).
  70.  
  71. Remove the bolts securing the shift cable brackets (F) (G). Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
  72.  
  73. Check bushing (H) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable.

  75. Remove the shift cable holder bracket from the transaxle.

  77. For 4WD models, remove the propeller shaft protector.
  78.  
  79. Remove both mid-bracket bolts.
  80.  
  81. Make reference marks on the body across the marks on the edge of the front subframe.
  82.  
  83. Attach the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).
  84.  
  85. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.

  87. Remove the 6 bolts securing the front subframe and lower the subframe.
  88.  
  89. Secure the steering gearbox from the body with a strap.
  90.  
  91. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the drive plate bolts (B) (8) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.

  93. Remove the driveshafts from the differential and the intermediate shaft. Clean then coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, and put plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.

  95. Remove the intermediate shaft. Clean then coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, and put plastic bags over the intermediate shaft ends.

  97. Remove the upper transaxle housing mounting bolts.
  98.  
  99. Remove the transaxle mount bracket bolts.
  100.  
  101. Remove the front transaxle housing mounting bolts.
  102.  
  103. Lower the transaxle by loosening the wing nut on the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transaxle to clear the side frame.
  104.  
  105. Place a jack under the transaxle.
  106.  
  107. Remove the rear transaxle housing mounting bolts.
  108.  
  109. Slide the transaxle away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
  110.  
  111. Remove the torque converter and the dowel pins.
  112.  
  113. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged.
  114.  
  115. For 4WD models, install the propeller shaft protector.
  116.  
  117. If installing an overhauled or remanufactured transaxle, clean the ATF cooler.
  118.  

To install:

  1. For 4WD models, remove the propeller shaft protector.
  2.  
  3. Install the torque converter (A) on the mainshaft (B) with a new O-ring (C).
  4.  
  5. Install the 14 x 20mm dowel pins (D) in the torque converter housing.

  7. Place the transaxle on the jack and raise the transaxle to the engine level, then fit the transaxle to the engine.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear transaxle housing mounting bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the front transaxle housing mounting bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the upper transaxle housing mounting bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Secure the transaxle mount bracket on the transaxle housing with new mounting bolts and tighten to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install a new set ring on the intermediate shaft.
  18.  
  19. Clean the areas where the intermediate shaft contacts the transaxle (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air. Apply ATF to the intermediate shaft splines, then install the intermediate shaft.
    WARNING
    Be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transaxle.

  21. Install a new set ring on the left driveshaft.
  22.  
  23. Clean the areas where the left driveshaft contacts the transaxle (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air. Then install the left driveshaft, be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transaxle. Turn the steering knuckle fully outward, and slide the driveshaft into the differential until you feel the set ring fully engage the side gear.

  25. Apply the recommended grease to the right driveshaft inboard-joint splines.
  26.  
  27. Slide the right driveshaft over the intermediate shaft splines until the driveshaft fully engages the intermediate shaft set ring.
  28.  
  29. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with the 8 bolts. Rotate the crankshaft pulley, as necessary, to tighten the bolts to 1 / 2 of the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern. After tightening the last bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely. Tightening torque: 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

  31. Install the torque converter cover and tighten to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Set the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B) and tighten the wing nut (C).

  35. Loosely install new subframe mounting bolts.
  36.  
  37. Align all reference marks on the front subframe with the marks you made on the body, then tighten the mounting bolts on the subframe to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install new mid-bracket bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Secure the lower torque rod with new bolts and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  42.  
  43. For 4WD models, install the propeller shaft protector and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  44.  
  45. For 4WD models, install the propeller shaft to the transfer companion flange by aligning the reference marks made earlier and tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Loosely install the steering gearbox bracket mounting bolts, then tighten the bracket mounting bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Install both lower arms to both ball joints and loosely install new mounting nuts and bolts. Tighten the nuts and the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) in the following order: the nut on the front, the nut on the rear, then the bolt.
  50.  
  51. Install the stabilizer links to the stabilizer and install the nuts. Insert a 6mm Allen wrench in the ball joint pin, and tighten the nuts to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
  52.  
  53. Install the 3-way catalytic converter (A) with the bolts, new self-locking nuts, and new gaskets (B) (C). Tighten as illustrated.

  55. Connect the A/F sensor connector and the secondary heated oxygen sensor connector.
  56.  
  57. Install the sensor harnesses in the harness clamps.
  58.  
  59. Install the shift cable holder bracket on the transaxle.
  60.  
  61. Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing in the shift cable end. Attach the shift cable end to the control lever, then insert the control pin into the control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
  62.  
  63. Secure the shift cable brackets with the bolts and tighten to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  64.  
  65. Install the shift cable cover and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  66.  
  67. Secure the ATF filter with the bolt on the front subframe and tighten the bolt to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  68.  
  69. Secure the power steering fluid line clamp with the bolt and the power steering fluid line with the clamps.
  70.  
  71. Remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger adapters.
  72.  
  73. Remove the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) from the cylinder head.
  74.  
  75. Connect the ATF cooler hoses to the ATF cooler lines and secure the hoses with the clips.
  76.  
  77. Connect the shift solenoid harness connector, the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector, and the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector, and install the harness clamp on the clamp bracket.
  78.  
  79. Connect the 3rd clutch transaxle fluid pressure switch connector and install the harness clamp on its clamp bracket.
  80.  
  81. Connect the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector, and install the harness clamp on its clamp bracket.
  82.  
  83. Install the transaxle range switch connector on the connector bracket and connect the connector.
  84.  
  85. Connect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector and the 2nd clutch transaxle fluid pressure switch connector and install the harness clamps on the clamp brackets.
  86.  
  87. Install the air cleaner housing mounting bracket, and install the harness clamp on the harness clamp bracket.
  88.  
  89. Refill the transaxle with the proper amount and type of ATF.
  90.  
  91. Install the battery base.
  92.  
  93. Install the air intake duct and the air cleaner.
  94.  
  95. Install the front bulkhead cover.
  96.  
  97. Install both lids on the cowl cover.
  98.  
  99. Install and connect the battery.
  100.  
  101. Set the parking brake. Start the engine and shift the transaxle through all positions 3 times.
  102.  
  103. Check the shift lever operation, the A/T gear position indicator operation, and the shift cable adjustment.
  104.  
  105. Install the splash shield.
  106.  
  107. Install the wheels, check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
  108.  
  109. Check the ATF level.
  110.  
  111. Road-test the vehicle.
  112.  
  113. After the road test, raise and safely support the vehicle.
  114.  
  115. Loosen the upper torque rod bolt.
  116.  
  117. Loosen the transaxle mount base bracket bolt and the nuts.
  118.  
  119. Loosen the lower torque rod bolts.
  120.  
  121. Retighten the lower torque rod bolts (B) to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  122.  
  123. Retighten the bolt (A) to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm).

  125. Tighten the transaxle mount base bracket bolt and the nuts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).

  127. Tighten the upper torque rod bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
