Bearing Replacement



Specific to:

Honda CR-V 2007-2008

Check each bearing for damage. If the bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace the cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.

Inspection



Specific to:

Honda CR-V 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  

Using solvent, degrease the camshaft and clean out all of the oil holes. Visually inspect the cam lobes and bearing journals for excessive wear. If a lobe is questionable, check all of the lobes as indicated. If a journal or lobe is worn, the camshaft MUST BE replaced.


NOTE
If a journal is worn, there is a good chance that the bearings or journals are worn and need replacement.

If the lobes and journals appear intact, place the front and rear journals in V-blocks and rest a dial indicator on the center journal. Rotate the camshaft to check the straightness. If deviation exceeds 0.001 inch (0.0254mm), replace the camshaft.

Check the camshaft lobes with a micrometer, by measuring the lobes from the nose to the base and again at 90° (see illustration). The lobe lift is determined by subtracting the second measurement from the first. If all of the exhaust and intake lobes are not identical, the camshaft must be reground or replaced.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Honda CR-V 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, Front Cover and Seal, removal & installation.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the rocker arm adjusting screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the camshaft holder bolts. To prevent damaging the camshafts, loosen the bolts, in sequence, 2 turns at a time.
    NOTE
    Mark the camshafts, camshaft brackets, and bolts so they are placed in the same position and direction at installation.

  9. Remove the camshaft chain guide, the camshaft holders, and the camshafts.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Reassemble the rocker arm assembly.
  2.  
  3. Clean and dry the No. 5 rocker shaft holder mating surface.
  4.  
  5. Apply liquid gasket (P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009) to the cylinder head mating surface of the No. 5 rocker shaft holder and to the inside edge of the bolt holes. Install the component within 5 minutes of applying the liquid gasket.
    1. Apply a bead of liquid gasket about 0.12 inch (3mm) in diameter along the broken line (A).
    2.  
    3. If applying liquid gasket P/N 08718-0012, the component must be installed within 4 minutes.
    4.  
    5. If too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket, remove the old liquid gasket and residue, then reapply new liquid gasket.

  7. Insert the bolts (A) into the rocker shaft holder, then install the rocker arm assembly (B) on the cylinder head.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts from the rocker shaft holder.

  11. Make sure the punch marks on the variable valve timing control actuator and exhaust camshaft sprocket are facing up, then set the camshafts (A) in the holder.
  12.  
  13. Set the camshaft holders (B) and camshaft chain guide B (C) in place.

  15. Tighten the camshaft holder bolts to the specified torque in the sequence shown.
    1. Bolts 8 x 1.25mm: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolts 6 x 1.0mm: 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)-bolts 21, 22, and 23.
      NOTE
      If the engine does not have bolt 21, skip it and continue the torque sequence.

  17. Install the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, Front Cover and Seal, removal & installation.

  19. Adjust the valve clearance as needed.
