WARNING
Care must be taken when handling the ECT sensor. Damage to the ECT sensor will affect proper operation of the fuel injection system.

2.8L & 3.6L Engines

  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
  2.
  3. Remove the shielding from around the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor on the left side of the engine.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the ECT sensor.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install the ECT sensor and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  4.
  5. Install the shielding around the ECT sensor.
  6.
  7. Inspect and fill the cooling system as necessary.
  8.

3.1L & 3.4L (VIN E) Engines

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. With the engine cold, relieve the coolant pressure by opening the radiator cap or opening the bleed screw near the thermostat.
  4.
  5. Remove the air intake duct.
  6.
  7. Detach the electrical connector from the ECT sensor.
  8.
  9. Using a deep well socket and extension, remove the sensor.

To install:

  1. Coat the ECT sensor threads with a suitable sealant.
  2.
  3. Install the ECT sensor, and using a deep well socket and extension tighten the sensor to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the remaining components in the order of removal.
  6.
  7. Check for leaks and replenish the coolant, as required.
  8.

3.2L Engine

  1. Partially drain the coolant system.
  2.
  3. Remove the wiper motor module in order to gain access to the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor.
  6.
  7. Remove the ECT sensor from the water crossover.
  8.

To install:

  1. Apply a non-hardening sealer to the sensor threads prior to installation in order to prevent coolant leaks.
  2.
  3. Install the ECT sensor into the water crossover and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the electrical connector to the ECT sensor.
  6.
  7. Install the wiper motor module.
  8.
  9. Fill the coolant system.
  10.

3.4L (VIN X) Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the rear intake duct and MAF sensor assembly.
  4.
  5. Drain the engine coolant, into a suitable container, to a level below the sensor.
  6.
  7. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
  8.
  9. Detach the ECT sensor electrical harness.
  10.
  11. Using a 19mm deep well socket and a 6-inch extension, remove the ECT sensor.
  12.
