Electric Engine Fan

Print

CAUTION
An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fans. To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.

All vehicles use two fans to aid airflow through the radiator and air conditioning condenser. Each fan is driven by an electric motor and is attached to the radiator. Motor size varies with engine option.

The fan motors are activated by a coolant temperature switch, or, in the latest models, by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The fans are activated through a relay, when coolant temperature reaches about 230°F (110°C). A transducer can also activate the circuit, depending upon A/C request or A/C compressor head pressure to the condenser.

The engine cooling fan relays provide the high current required for the cooling fan motors using a low current signal coming from the PCM. This signal is a function of various inputs.
