Crankshaft Front Seal

Removal & Installation



2.8L & 3.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  6.  
  7. Using a flat-bladed tool to remove the crankshaft seal.

To install:

  1. Using Special Tool J-29184 or equivalent, install the crankshaft front seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 150 degrees.
  4.  
  5. Install the accessory drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.

3.2L Engine
  1. Remove the timing belt cover and timing belt.
  2.  
  3. Install Crankshaft Hub Holder J-42065 to the crankshaft gear.
  4.  
  5. Counter hold the crankshaft gear using the hub holder.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft gear bolt using Crank Hub Torx®socket J-42098.
  8.  
  9. Discard the gear bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft gear.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pump collar.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Coat the lip of the crankshaft front oil seal with a small amount of clean engine oil, to aid in installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump collar fully into the crankshaft front oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft gear to the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Mount the J-42065 to the crankshaft gear.
  8.  
  9. Complete the following in order to install the new crankshaft gear bolt:
    1. Counter hold the crankshaft gear using the holding tool as shown.
    2.  

  10.  
  11. Install the new crankshaft gear bolt using the Torx®hub socket.
    1. Tighten the crankshaft gear bolt to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Rotate the crankshaft gear bolt 45 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Repeat the sequence turning the crankshaft gear bolt an additional 15 degrees.

  13. Remove the holding tool from the crankshaft gear.
  14.  
  15. Install the timing belt.
  16.  
  17. Install the timing belt cover.
  18.  

5.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Radiator assembly
     
    A/C condenser
     
    A/C drive belt
     
    Starter motor
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     

  4.  
  5. Gently pry the crankshaft seal from the front cover.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the outer edge of the oil seal and front cover oil seal bore with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the front oil seal onto Special Tool J-41478 Installer guide.
  4.  
  5. Install the J-41478 threaded rod into the end of the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Use a wrench to hold the hex on the installer tool.
  8.  
  9. Use a second wrench to rotate the installer nut clockwise until the seal bottoms out in the front cover oil seal bore.

  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 240 ft. lbs. (330 Nm).
     
    Starter motor
     
    A/C drive belt
     
    A/C condenser
     
    Radiator assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.
