Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper and wire out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear brake rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel driveshaft nut and discard.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ABS sensor electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the ABS sensor electrical connector from the backing plate.
  14.  
  15. Remove the parking brake cable bracket mounting bolts from the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the parking brake cable bracket from the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper ball joint mounting nut.
  20.  
  21. Install a ball joint remover to the ball stud and separate the ball stud from the knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower shock mounting bolt.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lower control arm to knuckle mounting bolt.
  28.  
  29. Remove the trailing arm to knuckle mounting bolt and nut.
  30.  
  31. Remove the adjustment link to knuckle mounting bolt.
  32.  
  33. Install Wheel Hub Remover J-42129 to the wheel bearing/hub.
  34.  
  35. Disengage the wheel drive shaft from the wheel bearing/hub.
  36.  
  37. Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.
  38.  
  39. Remove the wheel bearing/hub bolts.
  40.  
  41. Remove the knuckle and backing plate from the wheel bearing/hub.

To install:

  1. Install the knuckle and backing plate to the wheel bearing/hub.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel bearing/hub mounting bolts and tighten to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the knuckle to the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Loosely install all fasteners before tightening.

  7. Install the adjustment link to knuckle mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Install the trailing arm to knuckle mounting bolt and nut.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower shock and mounting bolt.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower control arm to knuckle mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the upper ball joint to the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Install the upper ball joint mounting nut.
  18.  
  19. Install the parking brake cable bracket to the knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Install the parking brake cable bracket mounting bolts to the knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the upper ball joint nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), plus an additional 210 degrees.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the lower control arm-to-knuckle bolt to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Tighten the lower shock bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Tighten the trailing arm-to-knuckle bolt and nut to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Tighten the adjustment link-to-knuckle bolt to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Tighten the parking brake cable bracket bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Remove the jack.
  36.  
  37. Connect the ABS sensor electrical connector to the backing plate.
  38.  
  39. Connect the ABS sensor electrical connector.
  40.  
  41. Install a new wheel drive shaft nut and tighten to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Install the brake rotor.
  44.  
  45. Install the tire and wheel.
  46.  
  47. Lower the vehicle.
  48.
