Trailing Arm

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake pipe bracket retaining nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake pipe bracket from the mounting studs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower control arm to the knuckle mounting bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the trailing arm to the knuckle mounting nut and bolt.
  14.  
  15. Support the frame with a suitable jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front bolts from the rear frame.
  18.  
  19. Lower and support the front of the rear frame.
  20.  
  21. Remove the trailing arm to the rear frame mounting bolt and nut.
  22.  
  23. Remove the trailing arm.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the trailing arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the trailing arm to the frame mounting bolt and nut and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the support from the frame and raise the frame into position.
  6.  
  7. Install the front bolts in the rear frame and tighten to 195 ft. lbs. (265 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the trailing arm to the knuckle mounting bolt and nut and tighten to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the brake pipe bracket to the mounting studs.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake pipe bracket retaining nuts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the lower control arm to the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower control arm to the knuckle mounting bolt and tighten to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the tire and wheel.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  

The trailing arms are the inverted U-shape arms that go from the rear suspension knuckle back to a body mount bracket.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Detach the ABS electrical harness.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the trailing arm from the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the trailing arm bracket-to-body bolts.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the trailing arm from the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the trailing arm from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal process. Use the following torque specifications:
    1. Tighten the bracket bolt to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the trailing arm bracket-to-body bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the trailing arm-to-knuckle nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm).
