Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake hose bracket from the mounting studs when removing the right coil spring.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm using a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower shock mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Lower the lower control arm and remove the jack.
  12.  
  13. Support the cradle with a suitable jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the side cradle-to-body mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Lower the side of the cradle and remove the coil spring.

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring and raise the cradle into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the cradle-to-body mounting bolts. Tighten the front bolts to 195 ft. lbs. (265 Nm). Tighten the rear bolts to 141 ft. lbs. (191 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install a suitable jack under the lower control and raise the control arm until the shock absorber aligns with the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock absorber lower mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose bracket, if removed. Tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel.
  12.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shock absorber.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and wire aside.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper control arm mounting nuts and bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper ball joint mounting nut.
  14.  
  15. Using a ball joint remover disconnect the upper ball joint from the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Connect the upper ball joint to the knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper ball joint to the knuckle retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus and additional 210 degree turn.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper control arm to the frame mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolts to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the caliper.
  16.  
  17. Install the shock absorber.
  18.  
  19. Install the tire and wheel.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer shaft link lower retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear wheel drive shaft nut.
  10.  
  11. Install Wheel Hub Remover J-42129 to the wheel bearing/hub.
  12.  
  13. Using the remover, disengage the wheel drive shaft from the rear wheel hub and bearing.
  14.  
  15. Support the lower control arm using a jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower shock mounting bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower control arm to knuckle mounting bolt.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower control arm to frame mounting bolt and nut.
  22.  
  23. Separate the lower control arm from the knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Lower the jack.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rear coil spring and the lower control arm.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear coil spring and the lower control arm to jack.
  2.  
  3. Raise the jack until lower control arm and rear coil spring is in position in the frame.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm to frame mounting bolt and nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arm to knuckle mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolt to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower shock mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install a new rear wheel drive shaft nut.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Connect the stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm.
  22.  
  23. Install the stabilizer shaft link retaining nut.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Lower the jack.
  28.  
  29. Install the tire and wheel.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Check the wheel alignment.
  34.  

  1. Remove the strut from the vehicle using the procedures found in this section.
  2.  
  3. Mount the strut in a strut compressor tool.
  4.  
  5. Use the strut compressor forcing screw to compress the spring just enough to release the tension from the strut mount.
  6.  
  7. Remove the strut shaft nut.
  8.  
  9. Relieve the spring tension and remove the spring from the strut.
  10.

To install:

  1. Inspect all components for wear or damage.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear spring lower insulator. Make sure the lower spring is visible between the step and the location mark on the insulator.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear suspension spring and the dust shield to the lower insulator. Install the jounce bumper and strut mount.
  6.  
  7. Use a strut compressor to compress the strut, working the strut shaft through the strut mount.
  8.  
  9. Compress the strut and spring assembly enough to install the strut shaft nut. Torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the strut into the vehicle using the procedures found in this section.
