Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant from the air conditioning (A/C) system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front tire.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front air deflector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the washer solvent container.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake line retaining clips from the engine frame in order to allow the brake lines to move during removal of the A/C compressor.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
    WARNING
    Seal the compressor suction and discharge ports after the hoses are removed in order to keep contaminants from entering the compressor and oil from draining out of the compressor during removal.

  19. Remove the A/C suction and discharge retaining nuts. Reposition the A/C hoses.
  20.  
  21. Remove sealing washers and discard.
  22.  
  23. Remove the A/C compressor retaining nut and bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the A/C compressor.

To install:

  1. Install the compressor.
  2.  
  3. Install compressor mounting nut and front and rear bolts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install new sealing washers.
  6.  
  7. Install the A/C suction and discharge hoses. Tighten the retaining nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Reconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake line retaining clips to the engine frame.
  12.  
  13. Install the washer solvent container.
  14.  
  15. Install the front air deflector.
  16.  
  17. Install the right front tire.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the drive belt.
  22.  
  23. Evacuate and recharge A/C system. Check connections for leaks.
  24.  

2.8L & 3.6L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intake air resonator and reposition for compressor clearance.
  10.  
  11. Raise the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front air deflector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the compressor mounting bolt (3) from the compressor.

  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the compressor mounting bolts (1) until the threads are disengaged.
  20.  
  21. Remove the suction line bolt at the compressor.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the suction line from the compressor.
  24.  
  25. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
  26.  
  27. Remove the discharge line bolt at the compressor.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the discharge line from the compressor.
  30.  
  31. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the electrical connector (2) from the compressor.
    NOTE
    While removing the compressor from the vehicle, the power steering line may need to be flexed.

  35. Rotate the compressor. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Replace the desiccant bag if the following conditions exist.
    1. The color of the PAG oil is brown or black
    2.  
    3. Presence of foreign substances.
    4.

  39. Remove the compressor mounting bolts from the compressor.
  40.  
  41. If you are replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Partially install the compressor.
  2.  
  3. Install the compressor mounting bolts (1) finger tight. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the new O-ring seals to the line fittings.
  6.  
  7. Install the suction line to the compressor.
  8.  
  9. Install the suction line bolt to the compressor. Tighten the nut to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the new O-ring seals to the line fittings.
  12.  
  13. Install the discharge line to the compressor.
  14.  
  15. Install the discharge line bolt to the compressor. Tighten the nut to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the electrical connector (2).
  18.  
  19. Raise the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the compressor mounting stud (3) finger tight. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the front air deflector.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Reposition intake air resonator and install.
  28.  
  29. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  30.  
  31. Install the engine drive belt.
  32.  
  33. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system.
  34.  
  35. Leak test the fitting of the repaired or reinstalled component using a halogen leak detector.
  36.  

6.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the condenser.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the A/C drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the upper A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Raise the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front air deflector.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.
  22.  
  23. Remove the screw for the electrical connector mounting bracket. Necessary for clearance during the compressor removal.
  24.  
  25. Remove the suction and discharge line bolts at the compressor.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the suction and discharge line from the compressor.
  28.  
  29. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
  30.  
  31. Remove the 4 compressor mounting bolts. 
  32.  
  33. Remove the A/C hose support bracket to oil pan bolt.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Rotate the compressor. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.

  39. Replace the desiccant bag if the following conditions exist.
    1. The color of the PAG oil is brown or black
    2.  
    3. Presence of foreign substances.
    4.

  41. If you are replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Remove the screw for the electrical connector mounting bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper A/C compressor mounting bolts to the compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install the A/C compressor.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper compressor mounting bolts finger tight.
  8.  
  9. Raise the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the electrical connector mounting bracket to the compressor.
  16.  
  17. Install the screw for the electrical connector mounting bracket. Tighten the screw to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the new O-ring seals to the line fittings.
  20.  
  21. Install the suction and discharge lines to the compressor. Tighten the retaining nuts to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Connect the electrical connector.
  24.  
  25. Install the A/C hose support bracket to oil pan bolt. Tighten the nut to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the front air deflector.
  28.  
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the upper front compressor mounting bolt.
  32.  
  33. Install the A/C drive belt.
  34.  
  35. Install the engine drive belt.
  36.  
  37. Install the condenser.
  38.  
  39. Install the radiator.
  40.  
  41. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  42.  
  43. Refill the cooling system.
  44.  
  45. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system.
  46.  
  47. Leak test the fitting of the repaired or reinstalled component using a halogen leak detector.
