Removal & Installation



Rear Driveshaft
CTS
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the exhaust system.
    NOTE
    Remove only the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts. Do NOT remove the coupler from the propeller shaft.

  6.  
  7. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts, nuts and washers.

  9. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts, nuts and washers.
  10.  
  11. Support the propeller shaft at the support bearing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts securing the support bearing to the vehicle underbody.
  14.  
  15. Push the front propeller shaft toward the rear of the vehicle in order to release the propeller shaft coupler from the transmission flange.
  16.  
  17. While holding the front propeller shaft, lower the support device under the propeller shaft support bearing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the support bearing from the mounting studs.
  20.  
  21. Pull the rear propeller shaft forward to release the coupler from the differential flange.
    NOTE
    Note the number and location of the shim packs between the support bearing mounting bracket and the underbody to ensure proper assembly.

  23. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Inspect the propeller shaft coupler for the following conditions:

    Splitting of the coupler
     
    Deep cracking. Minor superficial cracking of the coupler is acceptable
     
    Looseness at the propeller shaft mounting bolts
     
    Distorted or missing mounting bolt bushings
     

  26.  
  27. If any of the above conditions are found, the propeller shaft requires replacement.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Using a clean shop towel, clean the following:

    Differential flange centering pin
     
    Transmission flange centering pin
     
    Front propeller shaft centering bushing
     
    Rear propeller shaft centering bushing
     

  2.  
  3. Apply a small amount of lubricant GM P/N 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037), or equivalent, to the front and rear propeller shaft centering bushings.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts, bolts, and washers. Replace if damaged or worn.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear propeller shaft coupler to the differential flange.
  8.  
  9. Rest the support bearing on the support device.
    NOTE
    If reusing the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts and bolts. To ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention, the threads must be free of debris prior to the application of the threadlocker.

  10.  
  11. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493, (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.

  13. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange washers to the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts and washers to the propeller shaft coupler and differential flange.
  16.  
  17. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts. Tighten the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts and nuts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Push the front propeller shaft to the rear of the vehicle, and install the propeller shaft coupler to the transmission flange.
  20.  
  21. Install the front propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts to the transmission flange and propeller shaft coupler.
  22.  
  23. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange washers and nuts. Tighten the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts and nuts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the center support bearing to the vehicle underbody.
  26.  
  27. Raise the support device in order to hold the support bearing in position.
  28.  
  29. Install the center support bearing bolts to the vehicle's underbody. Tighten the support bearing bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Remove the support device from under the support bearing.
  32.  
  33. Install the exhaust system.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  

CTS-V
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the exhaust system.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable jack, support the propeller shaft close to the support bearing.
  8.  
  9. Using a suitable jack, and/or heavy mechanical wire support the front propeller shaft close to the rear Constant Velocity (CV) joint.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts securing the support bearing to the vehicle underbody.
  12.  
  13. Reference mark the location of the propeller shaft CV joint to the differential flange.
  14.  
  15. Remove the propeller shaft CV joint-to-differential flange bolts.

  17. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts, nuts and washers.
  18.  
  19. Move the propeller shaft toward the front of the vehicle in order to release the propeller shaft CV joint from the differential flange.
  20.  
  21. While holding the propeller shaft, lower the support device under the propeller shaft.
  22.  
  23. Move the propeller shaft rearward to release the coupler from the transmission flange.
  24.  
  25. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Inspect the propeller shaft coupler for the following conditions:

    Splitting of the coupler
     
    Deep cracking. Minor superficial cracking of the coupler is acceptable
     
    Distorted or missing mounting bolt bushings
     

  28.  
  29. If any of the above conditions are found, the propeller shaft requires replacement.
  30.  
  31. If the propeller shaft coupler shows signs of heat related damage check for the following:

    Exhaust system alignment or wear
     
    Powertrain mount alignment or wear
     

  32.  
  33. Inspect the propeller shaft CV joint assembly for the following conditions:

    Grease leaking from the CV joint
     
    Damage to the CV joint
     
    Damage to the CV joint boot
     

  34.  
  35. If any of the above conditions are found, the propeller shaft requires replacement.
  36.  
  37. Inspect the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts, bolts, and washers. Replace if damaged or worn.
  38.  

To install:


NOTE
The propeller shaft flange bolts must be installed toward the flanges.

  1. Using a suitable jack support the propeller shaft close to the support bearing.
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable jack, and/or heavy mechanical wire support the front propeller shaft close to the rear CV joint.
  4.  
  5. Apply a small amount of lubricant GM P/N 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft centering bushing.
  6.  
  7. Install the front propeller shaft coupler to the transmission flange.
  8.  
  9. Push the propeller shaft to the front of the vehicle and install the propeller shaft to the differential flange.
  10.  
  11. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol, or equivalent, and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.

  13. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange washers to the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts and washers to the differential flange and propeller shaft coupler.
  16.  
  17. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts. Tighten the bolts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol, or equivalent, and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
  20.  
  21. Install the propeller shaft CV joint-to-differential flange bolts. Tighten the bolts in sequence (1-6) to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

  23. Raise the support device in order to hold the support bearing in position.
  24.  
  25. Install the center support bearing bolts to the vehicle underbody. Tighten the nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Remove the support devices from the propeller shaft.
  28.  
  29. Install the exhaust system.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.
