Removal & Installation



2.8L & 3.6L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Do NOT remove the oil filter adapter.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Front cover
     
    Left bank secondary camshaft timing chain
     
    Coolant temperature sensor
     
    Wiring harnesses from the cylinder head
     
    Power steering pump mounting bolts
     
    Surge tank hose
     
    Wiring harness bracket
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Oil filter adapter upper bolt
     



    Exhaust manifold
     
    Cylinder head

  1. Install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten using new bolts as follows:
    1. Step 1: Bolts 1-8 to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Bolts 1-8 plus 120 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Bolts 9-10 to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Bolts 9-10 plus 60 degrees.
    8.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil filter adapter upper bolt. Tighten to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Wiring harnesses bracket
     
    Surge tank hose
     
    Power steering pump bolts. Tighten bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Wiring harnesses
     
    Coolant temperature sensor
     
    Left bank secondary camshaft timing chain
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Front cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Front cover
     
    Right bank secondary camshaft timing chain
     
    Coolant hoses
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Wiring harnesses from the cylinder head
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Cylinder head

To install:

  1. Install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts as follows:
    1. Step 1: Tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Tighten an additional 120 degrees.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wiring harnesses to the cylinder head
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Coolant hoses
     
    Right bank secondary camshaft timing chain
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Front cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

4.6L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine mount strut bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the water crossover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the intake manifold.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the engine front cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 3 M6 cylinder head bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove and discard the 10 M11 cylinder head bolts.
    WARNING
    DO NOT reuse the M11 cylinder head bolts.

  25. Remove the left cylinder head. Make sure that no locating pins are stuck in the cylinder head.
    WARNING
    You must clean the thread sealant material from the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Failure to do so could cause false torque readings during reassembly.

  27. After removing the cylinder head, remove any remaining bolt thread sealant material from the threaded cylinder block holes.
  28.  
  29. Remove and discard the left cylinder head gasket.
  30.  
  31. Remove all remaining gasket material from the cylinder head and cylinder block.
  32.  
  33. Clean and inspect the cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Make sure all the cylinder head locating pins are securely installed in the cylinder block deck face.
  2.  
  3. Make sure all old thread sealant material is removed from the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block.
  4.  
  5. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket using the locating pins for retention.
  6.  
  7. Align the cylinder head with the locating pins.
  8.  
  9. Place the cylinder head in position on the cylinder block.
  10.  
  11. Install 10 NEW M11 cylinder head bolts until snug.
  12.  
  13. Install the 3 M6 cylinder head bolts until snug.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the 10 M11 cylinder head bolts as follows:
    1. Tighten the bolts (1-10) a first pass in the sequence shown to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolts a second pass in the sequence shown an additional 70 degrees using an angle meter.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the bolts a third pass in the sequence shown an additional 60 degrees using the angle meter.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the bolts a final pass in the sequence shown an additional 45 degrees (total 175 degrees) using the angle meter.

  17. Tighten the 3 M6 bolts cylinder head bolts as follows:
    1. Tighten the bolts (11-13) to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

  19. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain.
  20.  
  21. Install the engine front cover.
  22.  
  23. Install the camshaft cover.
  24.  
  25. Install the intake manifold.
  26.  
  27. Install the water crossover.
  28.  
  29. Install the alternator.
  30.  
  31. Install the engine mount strut bracket.
  32.  
  33. Install the left exhaust manifold.
  34.  
  35. Connect the negative battery cable.
  36.  
  37. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  38.  
  39. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  40.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water crossover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intake manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine front cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the engine harness ground terminal nut.
  20.  
  21. Remove the engine harness ground terminal.
  22.  
  23. Remove the stud attaching the exhaust manifold front pipe to the cylinder head.
  24.  
  25. Raise and support the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the stud attaching the right engine mount bracket to the cylinder head.
  28.  
  29. Loosen the bolts attaching the engine mount bracket to the transaxle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the bolt attaching the transaxle brace to the transaxle.
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Remove the nuts attaching the transaxle brace to the lift bracket studs.
  36.  
  37. Remove the transaxle brace.
  38.  
  39. Remove the rear lift bracket studs.
  40.  
  41. Remove the rear lift bracket.
  42.  
  43. Remove the 3 M6 cylinder head bolts.
  44.  
  45. Remove and discard the 10 M11 cylinder head bolts.
  46.  
  47. Remove the right cylinder head. Make sure that no locating pins are stuck in the cylinder head.
    WARNING
    You must clean the thread sealant material from the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Failure to do so could cause false torque readings during reassembly.

  49. After removing the cylinder head, remove any remaining bolt thread sealant material from the threaded cylinder block holes.
  50.  
  51. Remove and discard the right cylinder head gasket.
  52.  
  53. Remove all remaining gasket material from the cylinder head and cylinder block.
  54.  
  55. Place the cylinder head on a clean, flat surface with the combustion chambers face-up in order to prevent damage to the deck face.
  56.  
  57. Clean and inspect the cylinder head.
  58.  

To install:

  1. Make sure the locating pins are securely mounted in the cylinder block deck face.
  2.  
  3. Make sure any old thread sealant material is removed from the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block.
  4.  
  5. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket using the locating pins for retention.
  6.  
  7. Align the cylinder head with the locating pins.
  8.  
  9. Place the cylinder head in position on the cylinder block.
  10.  
  11. Install NEW M11 cylinder head bolts until snug.
  12.  
  13. Install the 3 M6 cylinder head bolts until snug.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the 10 M11 cylinder head bolts as follows:
    1. Tighten the bolts (1-10) a first pass in the sequence shown to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolts a second pass in the sequence shown an additional 70 degrees using an angle meter.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the bolts a third pass in the sequence shown an additional 60 degrees using the angle meter.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the bolts a final pass in the sequence shown an additional 45 degrees (total 175 degrees) using the angle meter.

  17. Tighten the 3 M6 bolts cylinder head bolts as follows:
    1. Tighten the bolts (11-13) to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

  19. Position the rear lift bracket to the cylinder head.
  20.  
  21. Install the rear lift bracket studs. Tighten the studs to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  23. Install the transaxle brace to the lift bracket studs.
  24.  
  25. Install the nuts attaching the transaxle brace to the lift bracket studs. Tighten the studs to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Raise the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Install the bolt attaching the transaxle brace to the transaxle. Tighten the studs to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the stud attaching the right engine mount bracket to the cylinder head. Tighten the bolt to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm). 
  32.  
  33. Tighten the bolts attaching the engine mount bracket to the transaxle. Tighten the bolt to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm). 
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Install the stud attaching the exhaust manifold front pipe to the cylinder head.
  38.  
  39. Install the engine harness ground terminal onto the stud.
  40.  
  41. Install the engine harness ground terminal nut. Tighten the nut to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Connect the engine harness electrical connector to the ECT sensor.
  44.  
  45. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain.
  46.  
  47. Install the engine front cover.
  48.  
  49. Install the camshaft cover.
  50.  
  51. Install the intake manifold.
  52.  
  53. Install the water crossover.
  54.  
  55. Install the right exhaust manifold.
  56.  
  57. Connect the negative battery cable.
  58.  
  59. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  60.  
  61. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  62.  

5.7L & 6.0L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Valve cover
     
    Rocker arms
     
    Pushrods
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Coolant air bleed pipe
     
    Power steering pump and mounting bracket
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Engine wiring harness
     
    Ground strap
     
    Cylinder head bolts
     
    Cylinder head
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: Tighten bolts 1-10 in to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Tighten bolts 1-10 in an additional 90 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Tighten bolts 1-10 an additional 70 degrees.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Tighten bolts 11-15 to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Engine wiring harness
     
    Ground strap. Tighten bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Power steering pump. Tighten mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Coolant air bleed pipe. Tighten bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Pushrods
     
    Rocker arms
     
    Valve cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Valve cover
     
    Rocker arms
     
    Pushrods
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Coolant air bleed pipe
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Engine wiring harness
     
    Negative battery cable from the right cylinder head
     
    Cylinder head bolts
     
    Cylinder head
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: Tighten bolts 1-10 in to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Tighten bolts 1-10 in an additional 90 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Tighten bolts 1-10 an additional 70 degrees.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Tighten bolts 11-15 to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

    Valve cover
     
    Negative battery cable from the right cylinder head
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
