Inspection

2.8L & 3.6L Engines

NOTE
There are no serviceable components within the oil pump. Disassemble the pump only to diagnose an oiling concern. A disassembled oil pump must not be reused. A disassembled oil pump must be replaced.

  1. Inspect the oil pump housing for damage.
  2.
  3. Inspect the oil pump cover for damage.
  4.
  5. Inspect the inner drive gear for damage. If inner diameter damage is found, ensure the crankshaft is also inspected.
  6.
  7. Inspect the outer driven gear for damage.
  8.
  9. Inspect the primary camshaft drive chain lower guide for damage. If replacement of the primary camshaft drive chain lower guide is necessary, replace the entire oil pump assembly. The primary camshaft drive chain lower guide is not serviceable separately.
  10.
  11. If debris or damage is present within the oil pump, further inspection of all of the engine components is necessary.
  12.

4.6L Engine
  1. Clean the oil pump components (1-8) with non-corrosive solvent.
  2.
  3. Dry the oil pump components with compressed air.
  4.
  5. Inspect the housing (1) and the cover (6) for cracks, scoring, casting imperfections and damaged threads.
  6.
  7. Inspect the gerotor gears (5) for chipping, galling or wear.
  8.
  9. Inspect the pressure relief valve (2) for embedded particles and/or damage.

NOTE
The internal parts of the oil pump assembly are not serviced separately, excluding the spring. If the oil pump components are worn or damaged, replace the oil pump as an assembly. The oil pump pipe and screen are to be serviced as an assembly. Do not attempt to repair the wire mesh portion of the pump and screen assembly.

  1. Clean the parts in solvent.
  2.
  3. Dry the parts with compressed air.
  4.
  5. Inspect the oil pump housing and the cover for cracks, excessive wear, scoring, or casting imperfections.
  6.
  7. Inspect the oil pump housing-to-engine block oil gallery surface for scratches or gouging.
  8.
  9. Inspect the oil pump housing for damaged bolt hole threads.
  10.
  11. Inspect the relief valve plug and plug bore for damaged threads.
  12.
  13. Inspect the oil pump internal oil passages for restrictions.
  14.
  15. Inspect the drive gear and driven gear for chipping, galling or wear. Minor burrs or imperfections on the gears may be removed with a fine oil stone.
  16.
  17. Inspect the drive gear splines for excessive wear.
  18.
  19. Inspect the pressure relief valve and bore for scoring or wear. The valve must move freely in the bore with no restrictions.
  20.
  21. Inspect the oil pump screen for debris or restrictions.
  22.
  23. Inspect the oil pump screen for broken or loose wire mesh.
  24.

Removal & Installation

2.8L & 3.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Timing chain

    Crankshaft sprocket

    Oil pump mounting bolts

    Oil pump

  4.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

Oil pump. Tighten the mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

    Crankshaft sprocket

    Timing chain

    Negative battery cable

  2.
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.

4.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the engine front cover.
  6.
  7. Remove the 3 oil pump assembly retaining bolts (1, 2, 3) identified by the larger head size.
  8.
  9. Slide the oil pump assembly off the nose of the crankshaft with the drive collar in place.
  10.
  11. Clean and inspect the oil pump.
  12.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump drive spacer into the oil pump so that the drive flat engages the pump rotor.
  2.
  3. Position the oil pump on the crankshaft.
  4.
  5. Install the retaining bolts.
    NOTE
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6.
  7. Apply upward pressure on the pump while tightening the three retaining bolts.
  8.
  9. Tighten the bolts in the sequence (1, 2, and 3) shown as follows:
    1. First pass tighten the oil pump mounting bolts in sequence to 89 lb inch (10 Nm ).
