Diagnosis & Testing
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the sunroof switch.
  2.  
  3. Interior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the ground circuit terminal 7 and ground.
  4.  
  5. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the inline harness connector C401.
  8.  
  9. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit terminal A and ground.
  10.  
  11. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  12.  
  13. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal C and ground.
  14.  
  15. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance
  16.  
  17. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the signal circuit terminal B and B+.
  18.  
  19. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to battery or an open/high resistance.
  20.  
  21. Ignition OFF, connect the inline harness connector C401.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the harness connector at the sunroof module.
  24.  
  25. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  26.  
  27. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  28.  
  29. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  30.  
  31. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for an open/high resistance.
  32.  
  33. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the signal circuit terminal 2 and B+.
  34.  
  35. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to battery or an open/high resistance.
  36.  
  37. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the sunroof control module.
  38.  
  39. Ignition ON, at the sunroof switch, test for B+ between the signal circuits listed below and ground.

    Sunroof switch terminal 8
     
    Sunroof switch terminal 9
     
    Sunroof switch terminal 10
     
    Sunroof switch terminal 11
     
    Sunroof switch terminal 12
     
    Sunroof switch terminal 13
     

  40.  
  41. If less than the specified range, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the sunroof control module.
  42.  
  43. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the sunroof switch.

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the sunroof switch.
  2.  
  3. Test for less than 15.0 ohms of resistance between the ground circuit terminal 5 and ground.
  4.  
  5. If greater than 15.0 ohms, test the following ground circuits for an open/high resistance. If all circuits test normal, replace the sunroof control module.

    Sunroof switch ground circuit terminal 5
     
    Sunroof control module harness connector C1 ground circuit terminal D
     

  6.  
  7. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the following sunroof switch signal circuits and ground. The roof should be inoperative in at least one or more directions.

    Terminal 8 sunroof switch open signal
     
    Terminal 2 sunroof switch close signal
     
    Terminal 4 sunroof switch open vent signal
     
    Terminal 6 sunroof switch close vent signal
     

  8.  
  9. If the roof moved in all directions, replace the sunroof switch.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the C1 harness connector at the sunroof control module.
  12.  
  13. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the battery positive voltage circuit terminal A and ground.
  14.  
  15. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the battery positive voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  16.  
  17. Ignition OFF, connect the C1 harness connector at the sunroof control module.
  18.  
  19. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the following sunroof switch signal circuits and ground.

    Terminal 1 sunroof express vent signal
     
    Terminal 2 sunroof switch close signal
     
    Terminal 4 sunroof switch open vent signal
     
    Terminal 6 sunroof switch close vent signal
     
    Terminal 7 sunroof express signal
     
    Terminal 8 sunroof switch open signal
     

  20.  
  21. If less than 4.8 volts, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the sunroof control module.
  22.  
  23. If greater than 5.2 volts, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the sunroof control module.
  24.  
  25. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the sunroof switch.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the C2 harness connector at the sunroof motor.
  28.  
  29. Connect a test lamp between the motor control circuit's terminals A and B.
  30.  
  31. Press and release any of the sunroof switches. The test lamp should illuminate.
  32.  
  33. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test both motor control circuits for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the sunroof control module.
  34.  
  35. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the sunroof motor.
  36.  

Test the sunroof switch as follows:

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the sunroof switch.
  2.  
  3. Test for infinite resistance between the following sunroof switch terminals with the switch in the open position:

    Switch low reference terminal 5 and roof open terminal 8
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and roof express terminal 7
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and roof close terminal 2
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and vent open terminal 4
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and vent express terminal 1
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and vent close terminal 6
     

  4.  
  5. If less than infinite for any test, replace the sunroof switch.
    NOTE
    If the switch tests open in any switch position other than Off, test the sunroof switch signal circuits for a short to voltage before replacing the switch.

  6.  
  7. Test for less than 3 ohms of resistance between the following sunroof switch terminals while pressing the appropriate switch.

    Switch low reference terminal 5 and roof open terminal 8
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and roof express terminal 7
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and roof close terminal 2
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and vent open terminal 4
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and vent express terminal 1
     
    Switch low reference terminal 5 and vent close terminal 6
     

  8.  
  9. If greater than 3 ohms on any of the tests, replace the sunroof switch.
  10.  

Test Sunroof limit switch as follows:

  1. Ignition ON, press the sunroof switch to move the sunroof to the full closed position.
  2.  
  3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the C1 harness connector at the sunroof motor.
  4.  
  5. Test for less than 5.0 ohms of resistance between the sunroof motor limit switch terminal 1 and the low reference terminal 3.
  6.  
  7. If greater than 5.0 ohms, replace the sunroof motor.
  8.  
  9. Ignition ON, press the sunroof switch to move the sunroof to the open or vent position.
  10.  
  11. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the sunroof motor limit switch terminal 1 and the low reference terminal 3.
  12.  
  13. If less than infinite, replace the sunroof motor.

Removal & Installation
Motor
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the windshield pillar garnish moldings.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front seats.
  10.  
  11. Remove the center console.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front carpet retainers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear carpet retainers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the center pillar garnish moldings
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear sail panels.
  20.  
  21. Remove the rear assist handles.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the left rear quarter panel.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the right rear quarter panel electrical connectors.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the coaxial cable.
  28.  
  29. Remove the rear roof mounted dome lamp.
  30.  
  31. Remove the sunshades.
  32.  
  33. Ensure that the plastic retainer on each side is retrieved as the headliner is lowered.
    NOTE
    Note the size and location of the retainers for installation.

  34.  
  35. Remove the fasteners for the sunshade rod retainers.
  36.  
  37. Remove the sunshade rod retainers.
  38.  
  39. Remove the fasteners for the overhead console.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the inside rear view mirror attachment.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the connector lead for the antenna module from the front windshield.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the connector lead for the antenna module from the rear window.
  46.  
  47. Pull down at the attachments in order to detach the six glue bond spots on the cardboard roof insulator to headliner.
  48.  
  49. Using the J 38778 panel tool disconnect the yellow plastic retainer securing the headliner to the roof panel above the overhead console.
  50.  
  51. With the aid from an assistant, remove the headliner through the right front door.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the sun roof motor electrical connector.
  54.  
  55. Remove the screws securing the sunroof motor to the module
  56.  
  57. Remove the sunroof motor from the module assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the sunroof motor to the sunroof module assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install and tighten the sunroof motor screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Verify the sunroof operation.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Initilization/Teach the sunroof motor.
  12.  
  13. Sunroof Motor/Actuator Initilization/Teach Process as follows:
    1. Ensure the electrical harness on the headliner is connected.
    2.  
    3. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
    4.  
    5. Move the rotary switch to the CLOSED position.
    6.  
    7. Wait for all motions to stop.
    8.  
    9. Push up on the switch and hold for 10 seconds.
    10.  
    11. Release the switch.
    12.  
    13. Repeat steps E-F two additional times.
    14.  

  14.  
  15. Verify functionality of the sunroof in all positions.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Ensure the antenna module ground strap is positioned properly to the headliner.
  20.  
  21. Install the rear dome lamp bezel to the headliner.
  22.  
  23. Loosely install the fastener.
  24.  
  25. Install the side assist handle retainers.
  26.  
  27. Install the assist handles and loosely install the fasteners in the integral retainer clips in order to hold the handles into position.
  28.  
  29. Install the sunshades to the headliner.
  30.  
  31. Position the electrical harness between the headliner and retainer clip.
  32.  
  33. Install the metal retainer ring.
  34.  
  35. Loosely install the fasteners.
  36.  
  37. Connect the electrical connectors.
  38.  
  39. Install the sunshade rod retainers.
  40.  
  41. Install the overhead console to the headliner.
  42.  
  43. On the right side, install the bolt through the sunshade rod retainer and through the overhead console bracket.
  44.  
  45. Position the ground strap onto the bolt.
  46.  
  47. Install the metal retainer clip over the bolt in order to hold the ground strap into position.
  48.  
  49. Install the left sunshade rod retainer.
  50.  
  51. Loosely install the fastener.
  52.  
  53. Ensure to install a new yellow plastic retainer to the bracket on the overhead console prior to assembly.
    NOTE
    The headliner is now ready for installation.

  54.  
  55. Ensure the electrical harnesses are visible prior to installation.
  56.  
  57. With the aid from an assistant, position the headliner to the cardboard roof insulator.
  58.  
  59. Position and align the yellow push-in retainer to the net hole located in roof panel above the overhead console.
  60.  
  61. Apply moderate hand pressure to the overhead console in order to seat the push-in retainer.
  62.  
  63. Secure both side assist handles in order to hold the headliner in place. Tighten the assist handle screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  64.  
  65. Install the assist handle bezel covers.
  66.  
  67. Install the fastener for the rear dome lamp. Tighten the fastener to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  68.  
  69. Secure the bezel cover.
  70.  
  71. Secure both sunshades.
  72.  
  73. Tighten the outer sunshade bezel fasteners to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  74.  
  75. Secure the right and left sunshade rod retainer. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  76.  
  77. Position the sunshades to the headliner.
  78.  
  79. Connect the electrical connectors to the inside rearview mirror.
  80.  
  81. Connect the connector lead for the antenna module to the front windshield.
  82.  
  83. Connect the connector lead for the antenna module to the rear window.
  84.  
  85. Connect the right rear quarter electrical connectors.
  86.  
  87. Connect the coaxial cable.
  88.  
  89. Connect the left rear quarter electrical connectors
  90.  
  91. Install the rear sail panels.
  92.  
  93. Install the rear seat back.
  94.  
  95. Install the center pillar garnish moldings.
  96.  
  97. Install the rear carpet retainers.
  98.  
  99. Install the front carpet retainers.
  100.  
  101. Install the center console.
  102.  
  103. Install the front seats. Tighten the seat track fasteners to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  104.  
  105. Install the windshield pillar garnish moldings. Tighten the fastener to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  106.  
  107. Enable the SIR system.
  108.  
  109. Connect the negative battery cable.
  110.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
    Do not apply battery voltage to a new sunroof motor/actuator prior to installing the motor/actuator to the sunroof module assembly.


    NOTE
    The sunroof window must be in the full closed position.

  2.  
  3. If possible, close the sunroof window before removing the sunroof motor/actuator.
  4.  
  5. Lower the headliner at the rear in order to gain access to the sunroof motor/actuator.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the sunroof motor/actuator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts attaching the sunroof motor/actuator to the sunroof module assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sunroof motor/actuator from the sunroof module assembly.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Manually move the sunroof window to the full closed position.
  2.  
  3. Install the sunroof motor/actuator to the sunroof module assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts attaching the sunroof motor/actuator to the sunroof module assembly.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts to 44 inch lb. (5 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connectors to the sunroof motor/actuator.
  10.  
  11. Verify the sunroof operation before installing the headliner.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear of the headliner.
  14.  

Switch
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Using your fingers, gently pull downward with equal pressure to release the retainers of the overhead console.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector to the sun roof switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws securing the switch to the overhead console.
  8.  
  9. Remove the switch.

To install:

  1. Install the switch to the overhead console.
  2.  
  3. Install the screws to secure the switch to the overhead console.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Install the overhead console.
  10.
