Knuckles

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wheel speed electrical connector, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel bearing/hub.
  10.  
  11. Remove the outer tie rod to steering knuckle retaining nut.
  12.  
  13. Use a steering puller and disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower stabilizer shaft link retaining nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper control arm to steering knuckle pinch bolt.
  20.  
  21. Separate the upper control arm from steering knuckle .
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower ball joint retaining nut and discard.
  24.  
  25. Use a ball joint remover and disconnect the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering knuckle from the lower ball joint stud.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint stud.
  2.  
  3. Install a new lower ball joint retaining nut.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nut in the following order: Tighten the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), tighten the nut to an additional 210 degree turn.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper control arm to steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper control arm to steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Apply threadlocker 242 or equivalent to the threads of the stabilizer shaft link.
  14.  
  15. Connect the stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Install the stabilizer shaft link retaining nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Connect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Install the outer tie rod retaining nut and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the wheel bearing/hub.
  24.  
  25. Reconnect the wheel speed electrical connector, if equipped.
  26.  
  27. Install the tire and wheel.
  28.  
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30.  

(FE1) & (FE3) Suspensions
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft nut. Use a suitable tool to prevent the wheel hub/bearing from rotating while removing the axle nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front brake caliper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake rotor from the wheel hub/bearing.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wheel speed electrical connector, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wheel bearing/hub.
  16.  
  17. Remove the outer tie rod to steering knuckle retaining nut.
  18.  
  19. Use the J 24319-B puller to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the strut to steering knuckle nuts and bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower ball joint retaining nut and discard.
  24.  
  25. Use the J 43828 to separate the ball joint from the lower control arm.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the new lower ball joint retaining nut and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 210 degrees.
  4.  
  5. Install the strut to steering knuckle nuts and bolts. Tighten to 131 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the new outer tie rod to steering knuckle retaining nut. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 200 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel bearing/hub. Tighten the bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the wheel speed electrical connector, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake rotor to the wheel hub/bearing.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper.
  16.  
  17. Install the axle shaft nut. Use a suitable tool to prevent the wheel hub/bearing from rotating while installing the axle nut. Tighten the axle nut to 118ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the front tire and wheel assembly.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  

(FE7) Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft nut. Use a suitable tool to prevent the wheel hub/bearing from rotating while removing the axle nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front brake caliper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake rotor from the wheel hub/bearing.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wheel speed electrical connector, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wheel bearing/hub.
  16.  
  17. Remove the outer tie rod to steering knuckle retaining nut.
  18.  
  19. Use the J 24319-B puller to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the strut to steering knuckle nuts and bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower ball joint retaining nut and discard.
  24.  
  25. Use the J 39549 to separate the ball joint from the lower control arm.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the new lower ball joint retaining nut and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 190 degrees.
  4.  
  5. Install the strut to steering knuckle nuts and bolts. Tighten to 131 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the new outer tie rod to steering knuckle retaining nut. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 200 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel bearing/hub. Tighten the bolts to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the wheel speed electrical connector, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake rotor to the wheel hub/bearing.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper.
  16.  
  17. Install the axle shaft nut. Use a suitable tool to prevent the wheel hub/bearing from rotating while installing the axle nut. Tighten the axle nut to 170 ft. lbs. (230 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the front tire and wheel assembly.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
