Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer shaft link
     
    Shock assembly lower mounting bolts
     
    Outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using Puller J-24319-B

    Lower control arm mounting bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Lower and support the lower control arm to gain access to the lower ball joint.
  6.  
  7. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle using Special Tool J-43631 or equivalent Ball Joint Remover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the mounting bolts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    ABS wiring harness
     
    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus 210 degrees.
     
    Outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. Tighten the retaining nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Shock assembly lower mounting bolts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm. Tighten the retaining nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Front wheel.

  3. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front stabilizer shaft link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ball joint retaining nut.
  10.  
  11. Use the J 36226 ball joint separator to separate the ball joint from the control arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front control arm nuts and bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove rear control arm nut and bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the control arm from the vehicle

To install:

  1. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the front control arm nuts and bolts. Tighten the nut to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the rear control arm nut and bolt. Do not tighten the control arm bolt until the weight of the vehicle is supported by the control arm. The vehicle needs to be sitting at normal trim height, the tighten the bolt.
  6.  
  7. For (FE1) and (FE3) suspensions tighten the rear control arm nut and bolt to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
  8.  
  9. For the (FE7) suspension, tighten the nut and bolt to 108 ft. lbs. (146 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install a new ball joint retaining nut. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 210 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Install the front stabilizer shaft link. Tighten the stabilizer link nut to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the front tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.
