Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor wiring harness from the stabilizer shaft links.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer shaft link to stabilizer shaft retaining nuts.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer shaft mounting bolts and brackets.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer shaft insulators from the stabilizer shaft.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer shaft insulators to the stabilizer shaft. Install the insulator to the stabilizer shaft with the slit facing rearward.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer shaft to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer shaft brackets and mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Apply threadlocker 242 or equivalent to the threads of the stabilizer shaft link.
  10.  
  11. Connect the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft.
  12.  
  13. Install the stabilizer shaft link retaining nuts.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the link nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the bracket bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Connect the ABS sensor wiring harness to the stabilizer links.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

(FE1) & (FE3) Suspensions
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels and tires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer shaft links.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer shaft insulators.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left outer tie rod end retaining nut.
  12.  
  13. Using J 24319-B disconnect the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement.
  16.  
  17. Turn the left strut completely to the left. Guide the stabilizer shaft out the left side of the vehicle between the axle and the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stabilizer shaft out from under the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer shaft to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the exhaust manifold pipe.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the following components:
    1. The left and right stabilizer shaft insulators.
    2.  
    3. The brackets.
    4.  
    5. The bolts.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer shaft links
  8.  
  9. Install the left tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Install the left outer tie rod retaining nut.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the stabilizer shaft insulator bracket bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the outer tie rod end to steering knuckle to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm ). Plus an additional 200 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Install the front wheels and tires
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  

(FE7) Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer links.

  9. Remove the stabilizer shaft bracket bolts.

  11. Remove the stabilizer shaft brackets.
  12.  
  13. Remove the outer tie rod retaining nuts.
  14.  
  15. Using J 24319-B , disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Separate the ball joint.
  18.  
  19. Turn the right steering knuckle to the left, and guide the stabilizer shaft half out the right side of the vehicle in an upward direction, then remove the stabilizer shaft out the bottom center of the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer shaft to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the ball joint to steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the ball joint retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the ball joint retaining nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 210 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Loosely install the right and left stabilizer shaft insulators, brackets, and bolts.
  10.  
  11. Loosely install the stabilizer link insulators, washers, nut, and bolt.
  12.  
  13. Install the tie rod to steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the stabilizer bracket bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the stabilizer link nut to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the tie rod end to knuckle nut to 22 inch lbs. 30 Nm plus an additional 200 degrees.
  20.  
  21. Install the cotter pin in tie rod ends.
  22.  
  23. Install the front wheels and tires.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.
