Relieving Fuel System Pressure

Print

WARNING
Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.

Relieving fuel pressure with the use of a gauge as follows:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Loosen the fuel filler cap to relieve the tank pressure.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Intake manifold top cover

  6.
  7. Install a Fuel Pressure Gauge to the fuel pressure fitting. Wrap a shop towel around the fitting while installing the gauge.
  8.
  9. Connect a bleed hose into an approved container and open the valve to bleed the system.
  10.
  11. Close the valve and disconnect the gauge.
  12.
  13. Drain any remaining fuel from the gauge into the approved container.
  14.

Relieving fuel pressure without the use of a gauge as follows:

  1. If the fuel system requires repair, prevent fuel spillage by removing the fuel pump fuse.
  2.
  3. Loosen the fuel fill cap in order to relieve the fuel tank vapor pressure.
  4.
  5. Remove the engine cover, if required.
  6.
  7. Remove the fuel rail service port cap.
  8.
  9. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel rail service port and using a small flat-bladed tool, depress (open) the fuel rail test port valve.
  10.
  11. Remove the shop towel from around the fuel rail service port, and place in an approved gasoline container.
  12.
  13. Install the fuel rail service port cap.
  14.
  15. Install the engine cover, if required.
  16.
  17. Tighten the fuel fill cap.
