Ignition Switch

Removal & Installation




CAUTION
When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling . Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper and lower trim covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the connector from the theft deterrent control module.
  12.  
  13. If necessary, disconnect the connector from the ignition lock cylinder case.
  14.  
  15. Remove the theft deterrent control module from ignition lock cylinder case assembly.

  17. Rotate the key alarm connector (1) 90 degrees.
  18.  
  19. Gently pull the key alarm connector (1) out of the ignition lock cylinder case assembly (2).

  21. Disconnect the connector from the ignition switch assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the wires encased in the ignition switch clip (located on the side of the ignition switch).

  25. Remove the ignition switch assembly (2) using J-42759, the ignition switch connector release tool.

To install:

  1. Insert J-42759 into the ignition lock cylinder case assembly (1) and slide the ignition switch assembly (2) in.
  2.  
  3. Connect the connector to the ignition switch assembly (2).
  4.  
  5. Push the key alarm connector (1) into the ignition lock cylinder case assembly (2).
  6.  
  7. Rotate the key alarm connector (1) 90 degrees so that the key alarm connector (1) locks into place.
  8.  
  9. Install the wires back into the ignition switch clip.
  10.  
  11. Install the theft deterrent control module onto the ignition lock cylinder case assembly.
  12.  
  13. Connect the connector to the theft deterrent control module.
  14.  
  15. If necessary, connect the connector to the ignition lock cylinder case.
  16.  
  17. Install the lock cylinder.
  18.  
  19. Install the upper and lower trim covers.
  20.  
  21. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  22.  
  23. Enable the SIR system.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.

  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with a manual steering column, remove the tilt lever.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with a power steering column, remove the driver knee bolster.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed.
  16.  
  17. Release the plastic retaining arms on the theft deterrent module and slide it of the ignition lock cylinder case.

  19. Remove the ignition switch retaining bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering wheel theft deterrent lock, if equipped.

  23. Remove the ignition switch.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition switch.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel theft deterrent lock, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Tighten ignition switch and theft deterrent lock mounting bolts to 13 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Install the theft deterrent module, slide it on the ignition lock cylinder case.
  10.  
  11. Connect any electrical connectors as needed
  12.  
  13. Install the steering column trim covers and tighten bolts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  14.  
  15. If removed install the driver knee bolster.
  16.  
  17. If removed install the tilt lever.
  18.  
  19. Install steering wheel and tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Enable the SIR system.
